TP 380,385 - Considerations for Windows 98

Considerations
NOTE: IBM does not warrant that every function and operation described in the IBM or Microsoft® documentation will work or be free from limitations when the Windows 98 Upgrade is used with your ThinkPad computer. This document contains a list of hints, tips, and limitations that IBM is aware of on specific ThinkPad models with Windows 98 Upgrade installed. If you have not already installed Windows 98 please follow the ThinkPad Windows 98 Upgrade or Installation instructions available on the IBM Web Site.
Docking Station and Power Management
Slot or drive letters change when ThinkPad is docked.
Models: ThinkPad 380, 380D, 760x, and 765x models (excluding the 760C/CD and 760L/LD models).
Issue: PCMCIA socket numbers(#) are in reversed order when the system is attached to a port replicator with PCMCIA/CardBus slots and/or docking station. This occurs for all cold/warm/hot docking conditions.
Cause: Windows 98 assigns socket numbers according to the sequence that it finds them. This is by design of Windows 98.
Resolution: Functionally this creates no issue for your ThinkPad. Please rely on the socket numbers displayed on the 'Socket Status' under PC Card (PCMCIA) Properties for the actual PCMCIA socket locations. The PC Card (PCMCIA) Properties can be found in the Windows 98 Control Panel.
PCMCIA Card and Device Support
PCMCIA Card Resume on Ring function does not work when the ThinkPad enters Standby (Suspend).
Models: ThinkPad 380, 380D/E, 535, 535E, 560, and 560E models.
Issue: ThinkPad models that use the Cirrus Logic CL6729 PCMCIA Controller show no system wakeup on ring indicator resume event.
Cause: The current design of the Windows 98 PCMCIA device driver resets the ring indicator resume bit set in the CL6729 PCMCIA Control Register. This is a
known issue for Windows 98.
Resolution: None at this time, please contact Microsoft.
Preloaded application considerations for Windows 98
ConfigSafe
Due to differences between Windows 95 and Windows 98, any snapshots taken with ConfigSafe under Windows 95 are incompatible with Windows 98 and will cause system problems (unstable or crashes) if the Windows 95 snapshot is restored under Windows 98 (including the Windows 95 initial configuration snapshot). It is recommended that before upgrading to Windows 98, that you remove ConfigSafe from the system and then re-install it after the upgrade process is complete. This should eliminate any potential problems.
To remove ConfigSafe:
Click on Start ==>Program ==>ConfigSafe ==>ConfigSafe Uninstall .
Only version 1.05.03 or later is fully compatible with Windows 98. If you are running an earlier version, you can contact Artisoft at the web addresses below if you would like more information about purchasing an updated version that is compatible with Windows 98 or may call them at 520-670-7100.

Update Connector
Only version 2.01 or later of Update Connector is supported under Windows 98. To see which version of Update Connector you are running, in Update Connector, click on Help and then Program Information from the menu bar. To download the latest version of Update Connector, click 
here . Note: This file is 8MB in size so download times will be long.
Note: If you have uninstalled IE3.0 before installing Windows 98, you will need to reinstall Update Connector.
Installation Instructions
To install Windows 98 to a blank hard drive.
To upgrade to Windows 98 from Windows 95.
