**** IMPORTANT NOTICE ****
This document pertains only to ThinkPad's as a standalone system i.e., UNDOCKED configuration. It's recommended that all attachable devices, except for an external diskette drive, be removed from your ThinkPad before installing Windows(1) 98. This includes all PCMCIA/CARDBUS cards (LAN, modem, flash memory, ATA, SCSI, etc. docking stations, port replicators, and PC Card Enablers. If any of these devices are attached to your ThinkPad during the installation process, Windows 98 may not run as explained in this document.

This document contains information to assist you in installing Windows 98 operating system on IBM(2) ThinkPad 380/D/E/ED/XD and 385D/ED/XD(3) systems. If your ThinkPad currently has Windows 95 already installed and is working properly, IBM recommends you upgrade your ThinkPad to Windows 98 and follow the instructions in the Windows 98 Upgrade Guide.

STEP 1: Before Installing Windows 98

1.1 Backing up your software and data
This installation guide is designed to install Windows 98 from scratch and by following these instructions you will lose the data previously on your hard drive. For those users who do not have a Recovery CD or Backup CD with CD-ROM drive, IBM strongly recommends that you use a diskette backup program on your system to create recovery diskettes of the preinstalled Windows 95 operating system, device drivers, and applications. In addition, IBM recommends that you back up all important data files to diskettes before installing Windows 98.

1.2 How to get updated software from IBM
Before installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad, you will need to obtain updated software from IBM. Here is a list of the software you will need to obtain for your ThinkPad before installing Windows 98:

IBM PC Company is providing the updated software through several other channels as follows. It is suggested you get the latest software so that you can set up Windows 98 on your ThinkPad systems with the information described in this document:

1.3 Updating your ThinkPad System BIOS
Before upgrading your ThinkPad to Windows 98, you are strongly recommended to get the latest ThinkPad System Program Service Diskette and to update your system BIOS. Otherwise, Windows 98 may not run as explained in this document.

1.3.1 Building the System Program Service Diskette
To build the System Program Service Diskette, please follow the instructions listed below:

1. Download the file to a temporary directory on your hard drive.
2. Insert a blank formatted disk into the diskette drive.
3. Run the file by double-clicking on it from Windows Explorer.
4. Follow the instructions on the screen and it will expand the image onto your diskette drive.

1.3.2 Using the System Program Service Diskette (2-3 min)
After creating the System Program Service Diskette follow the instructions provided below:

Note: You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program. Also, if your computer is attached to a port replicator, docking station, or PC Card Enabler, turn off your computer and detach it before proceeding.

1. Print or display on another computer the instructions that accompany the System Program Service Diskette.
2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
3. Insert the System Program Service Diskette into the diskette drive and turn on the computer.
4. Select Read this first... from the menu and carefully read the information that appears.
5. Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
6. Select Update system program and press Enter. Follow the instructions on the screen.

Warning: Do not turn off or suspend your computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND YOUR COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.

After the BIOS update has completed, perform the following steps to make the changes effective:

7. Remove the System Program Service Diskette disk from the diskette drive and press Enter to restart your computer.
8. Press and hold the F1 key until the "Easy-Setup" menu appears.
9. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
10. Select Config, then press Initialize.
11. Select OK to initialize the system, then press Exit.
12. Next, select Restart and then OK to restart your computer.


STEP 2: Installing Windows 98

2.1 Installing Windows 98 (35-50 min)
When installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad, it's recommended that you read any readme files that are available on the Windows 98 installation CD. These files will have important information about installing Windows 98.

To install Windows 98 on your ThinkPad from a blank hard drive, please follow the instructions below:

Note: Before installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad, you are strongly recommended to get the latest System Program Service Diskette and update your system BIOS. Also, it's recommended that you obtain from IBM all updated software that you will need to install on your ThinkPad after installing Windows 98. Lastly, IBM recommends that you use a diskette backup program on your system to create recovery diskettes of the preinstalled Windows 95 operating system, device drivers, and applications if you do not have a Recovery CD or Back-up CD with CD-ROM drive on your system. In addition, all important data files should be backed-up on diskettes.

1. Boot into DOS.
2. Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD-ROM drive.
3. At the DOS prompt, type format C: and press Enter, where the letter (C:) is the drive designation for your computer's hard drive that you want to install Windows 98 onto.




4. Next, at the DOS prompt, type D:\Win98\SETUP, where the letter (D:) is the drive designation for your computer's CD-ROM.
5. Press Enter and follow any prompts that are presented on your screen until the installation has completed. If you encounter problems setting up Windows 98, refer to the setup.txt file that comes with the installation CD.
6. When the installation process is completed, your computer will be ready to run Windows 98.

Note: If you are installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad and are using the OS/2 Boot Manager, you may experience an exception error during the setup process. If this occurs, power-off and restart your computer. After restarting your computer, the Setup program will proceed with the installation of Windows 98.

2.2 Installing the ThinkPad Utility for Windows 98 (2-3 min)
The ThinkPad Utility will allow you to select various features for your ThinkPad under Windows 98. Such features include: power management, Fuel-Gauge program, Personalization Editor, Alarm, and others. However, in order for your ThinkPad to fully utilize these features, you will need to install this utility on your computer after installing Windows 98. Three separate diskettes will need to be downloaded off of IBM's Web site.

Please follow the instructions listed below to install the ThinkPad Utility on your computer:

1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert the ThinkPad Utility Diskette for Windows 95 disk into the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start=> Run.
4. Type A:\SETUP in the 'Open' field and click on OK.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen. When the "Install" window appears on your screen, click on OK to proceed with the installation.
6. Choose the path to copy the files to - we recommend using the default path. Then click on OK.
7. The default choices are already checked on the "Installation Options" screen. Click on Install to start the installation process.
8. Insert the Utility Data Diskette II and Utility Diskette for DOS, Personalization disks into the diskette drive when prompted by the Setup program. After inserting each disk, confirm the drive letter is A:\ in the dialog box, and click on OK.
9. When installation has completed, remove any disk from the diskette drive, and restart your computer.

2.3 Installing ThinkPad Video device driver (2-3 min)
Windows 98 only installs the standard VGA video driver. It is necessary to update this driver .

To install the driver, please follow the instructions listed below:

1. Start Windows 98.
2. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel.
3. Double-click on the Display icon. This will bring up the "Display Properties" window.
4. Click on the Settings tab, then click on the Advanced... button.
5. Next, click on the Adapter tab, then on the Change... button.
6. Insert the Video Features Diskette (NM2160) for Windows 95/98 disk into the diskette drive.
7. Click on Next, select Display a list of all drivers in a specific location..., then click on Next.
8. Click on Have Disk... .
9. Confirm the drive letter is A:\ in the dialog box, and click on OK.
10. Highlight the NeoMagic MagicGraph 128XD entry and click on OK to close the "Select Device" window.
11. If a window titled, "Update Driver Warning", appears on your screen, click YES on this window to confirm that you want to use this driver on your computer.
12. Click on Next to start copying files to your computer. Continue to follow the prompts to 'Finish' the installation.
13. Close the "Advanced Properties" window, then the "Display Properties" window.
14. Remove the disk from the diskette drive and click on Yes to restart your computer.

2.4 Installing ThinkPad Audio device driver (4-5 min)
A Crystal Audio device driver is included in Windows 98, and is automatically installed by the Windows 98 Setup program. However, this driver offers limited/minimal functionality and support for your ThinkPad and should be replaced with the Crystal Audio device driver provided by IBM.

To install the driver, please follow the instructions provided below:

1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert the Audio Features Diskette for Windows 95/98 disk into the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start=> Run.
4. Type A:\SETUP in the 'Open' field and click on OK.
5. When the Crystal Audio Setup window appears on your screen, click on the Uninstall Crystal Drivers button.
6. When uninstall has completed, remove any disk from the diskette drive, and click on Restart.
7. When your computer restarts and Windows 98 detects an 'Unknown Device', insert the ThinkPad Audio Features Diskette for Windows 95/98 disk into the diskette drive and click on Next.
8. Continue to click Next until files start copying from the diskette drive to your system.
9. While copying files you may get a message that 'The file msjstick.drv cannot be found'. If so, type "C:\windows\system" in the highlighted field and click OK - where C: is the designated drive letter where the windows directory is stored on.
10. Click on Finish.
11. Windows 98 will continue to detect more hardware and may copy more files from the ThinkPad Audio Features Diskette for Windows 95/98 disk until installation is complete.
12. When the installation process has completed, remove any disk from the diskette drive.
