**** IMPORTANT NOTICE ****
This document pertains only to ThinkPad's as a standalone system i.e., UNDOCKED configuration. It's recommended that all attachable devices, except for an external diskette drive, be removed from your ThinkPad before upgrading to Windows(1) 98. This includes all PCMCIA/CARDBUS cards (LAN, Modem, ATA, SCSI, etc. docking stations, port replicators, and PC Card Enablers. If any of these devices are attached to your ThinkPad during the upgrade installation, Windows 98 may not run as explained in this document.

This document contains information to assist you in upgrading from Microsoft Windows(1) 95 to Windows 98 operating system on IBM(2) ThinkPad 380/D/E/ED/XD and 385D/ED/XD(3) systems. Please be certain Windows 95 is functioning properly on your system before upgrading to Windows 98. If you are unsure whether the OS is functioning properly, IBM recommends that you save all important data and use the recovery CD to restore your system to Windows 95 prior to starting the upgrade process.

Step 1: Before Upgrading to Windows 98

1.1 Backing up your software and data
In most cases all of your data will remain in tact after the upgrade process has completed and if you select the option to save Windows 95 as a backup, you will not need to create an additional backup of the already installed OS. However, as a precaution, IBM recommends that you backup all important data files to diskette before upgrading to Windows 98.

1.2 How to get updated software from IBM
Before upgrading your ThinkPad to Windows 98, you will need to obtain updated software from IBM. Here is a list of the software you will need to obtain before upgrading your computer to Windows 98:

IBM PC Company is providing the updated software through several other channels as follows. It is suggested you get the latest software so that you can set up Windows 98 on your ThinkPad systems with the information described in this document:

1.3 Updating your ThinkPad System BIOS
Before upgrading your ThinkPad to Windows 98, you are strongly recommended to get the latest ThinkPad System Program Service Diskette and to update your system BIOS. Otherwise, Windows 98 may not run as explained in this document.

1.3.1 Download the System Program Service Diskette
To determine which System Program Service Diskette to download from IBM's Web site, please match your machine's model from the corresponding 380x/385x models listed below:

1.3.2 Building the System Program Service Diskette
To build the System Program Service Diskette, please follow the instructions listed below:

1. Download the file to a temporary directory on your hard drive.
2. Insert a blank formatted disk into the diskette drive.
3. Run the file by double-clicking on it from Windows Explorer.
4. Follow the instructions on the screen and it will expand the image onto your diskette drive.


1.3.3 Using the System Program Service Diskette (2-3 min)
After creating the System Program Service Diskette follow the instructions below:

Note: You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program. Also, if your computer is attached to a port replicator, docking station, or PC Card Enabler turn off your computer and detach it before proceeding.

1. Print or display on another computer the instructions that accompany the System Program Service Diskette.
2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
3. Insert the System Program Service Diskette into the diskette drive and turn on the computer.
4. Select "Read this first..." from the menu and carefully read the information that appears.
5. Press the ESC key to return to the menu.
6. Select "Update system program" and follow the instruction on the screen.

Warning: Do not turn off or suspend your computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND YOUR COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.

After the BIOS update has completed, perform the following steps to make the changes effective:

7. Remove the System Program Service Diskette disk from the diskette drive and press 'Enter' to restart your computer.
8. Press and hold the 'F1' key until the "Easy-Setup" menu appears.
9. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
10. Select 'Config', then press 'Initialize'.
11. Select 'OK' to initialize the system, then press 'Exit'.
12. Next, select 'Restart' and then 'OK' to restart your computer.


Step 2: Removing Preinstalled Software

2.1 SystemSoft CardWorks
The SystemSoft CardWorks/CardWizard application that provided PC Card software for your ThinkPad under Windows 95, will not be supported on Windows 98. Windows 98 offers improved PC Card/CardBus support that makes it easier for the OS to discover information about resources and configuring these devices. Failing to properly uninstall this application after upgrading to Windows 98 will destroy part of Windows environment, thus preventing your computer from running Microsoft's original PC Card driver. Also, if you fail to remove CardSoft before installing Windows 98, after you restart Windows 98 for the first time you will get a blue screen referencing a VFAT error. Therefore, if a version of CardWorks/CardWizard is installed on your computer under Windows 95, you should uninstall this application before upgrading to Windows 98.

2.1.1 Uninstalling SystemSoft CardWorks before upgrading to Windows 98
To uninstall this application from your ThinkPad under Windows 95, please follow the instructions listed below:

1. Determine whether your version of CardWorks can be uninstalled by Windows 95:
a. Start Windows 95.
b. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel.
c. Double-click on the 'Add/Remove Programs' applet.
If "SystemSoft CardWorks" is listed in the "Add/Remove Programs" dialog box, continue to step 2. Otherwise, skip to step 3.

2. If CardWorks can be removed through the Add/Remove Programs applet, perform the following steps:
a. Open c:\Windows\system.ini using a text editor, e.g., NOTEPAD. Delete the following 2 lines under the [386enh] section: "device=pcdisk.vxd" and "device=dos16m.vxd". Save the updated file, and close the text editor.
b. Go back to the 'Add/Remove Programs' applet in Start => Settings => Control Panel.
c. Select "SystemSoft CardWorks", and click on the [Add/Remove...] button.
d. Next, click on [YES] to confirm the removal of this application and its components.
e. Click on [YES] to restart your computer

3. If CardWorks cannot be removed through the Add/Remove Programs applet, perform the following steps:
a. Open an MS-DOS prompt.
b. Type copy \cardwork\pcmcia.ms \Windows\inf\pcmcia.inf and press 'Enter'. Confirm the overwrite.

Note: This is for a previous installation to the default (C:\Cardwork) directory. PCMCIA.MS is in the directory where CardWorks was installed to.

c. Next, remove all CardWorks related drivers for the config.sys file. Open c:\config.sys in a text editor, e.g., NOTEPAD. Delete those lines that refer to the CardWorks directory. Save the updated file, and close the text editor.
d. Remove CardWorks from the start directory by clicking: Start => Settings => TaskBar
e. Select the 'Start Menu Programs' tab.
f. Click on the [Remove] button.
g. Next, highlight the "CardWorks" entry and click on the [Remove] button. Confirm you want to remove this entry.
h. Click on [Close] of the "Remove Shortcuts/Folder" window, then click on [OK] on the "Taskbar Properties" window.
i. Restart your computer.

2.1.2 Uninstalling SystemSoft CardWorks after upgrading to Windows 98
After the Windows 98 Setup program has detected and configured all hardware devices on your computer, the following error message may appear on your screen:

"VFAT Device Initialization Failed"
A device or resource required by VFAT is not present or is unavailable.
VFAT cannot continue loading.
System halted.

If this message appears on your screen, please perform the following steps provided below to recover from this problem. This problem arises due to Windows 98 trying to load certain drivers needed for the SystemSoft CardWorks application.

1. Power off and restart your machine.
2. The next time you restart your machine, the "Microsoft Windows 98 Startup Menu" will appear on your screen.
3. Select or highlight "Safe mode" and press 'ENTER'.
4. Click on [OK] to verify Windows 98 is running in safe mode.
5. To manually remove the SystemSoft CardWorks application from your computer, please follow the steps provided below:

j. Remove all CardWork related drivers for the config.sys file. Open C:\config.sys in a text editor, e.g., NOTEPAD. Delete those lines that refer to the CardWorks directory. Save the updated file, and close the text editor.

Note: The letter (C:) is the drive designation where your system's current/active config.sys file is located.

k. Remove CardWorks from the start directory by clicking: Start => Settings => TaskBar & Start Menu...
l. Click on the 'Start Menu Programs' tab.
m. Click on the [Remove...] button.
n. Next, highlight the "CardWorks" entry and click on the [Remove] button. Confirm you want to remove this entry.
o. Click on [Close] of the "Remove Shortcuts/Folder" window, then click on [OK] on the "Taskbar Properties" window.
p. Restart your computer.
q. SystemSoft CardWorks is now removed from your computer.

6. The next time you restart your computer, Windows 98 will automatically start in 'Normal' mode.

If the above VFAT error doesn't occur on your 380x/385x ThinkPad model, please follow the instructions provided below to uninstall the SystemSoft CardWorks application from your ThinkPad under Windows 98:

1. Start Windows 98.
2. Click: Start => Programs => MS-DOS Prompt.
3. At the prompt, type copy c:\windows\inf\pcmcia.inf c:\windows\temp, then press 'Enter'.
4. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel. Double-click on 'Add/ Remove Programs' icon.
5. Select "SystemSoft CardWorks" and click the [Add/Remove...] button. Follow the instructions on screen to restart your computer.
6. Click: Start => Programs => MS-DOS Prompt.
7. At the prompt, type copy c:\windows\temp\pcmcia.inf c:\windows\inf, then press 'Enter'.
8. Type 'y' and press 'Enter' to overwrite the file.
9. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel. Double-click on the 'System' icon, the click on the 'Device Manager' tab.
10. Locate the 'PCMCIA socket' and click '+' mark to expand it.
11. Select each 'Texas Instruments PCI - 1250 CardBus Controller' listed under 'PCMCIA socket' and click on [Remove].
12. Shutdown and restart your computer.
13. The 'Add New Hardware Wizard' will appear and will detect the PCMCIA controller. Follow the defaults by clicking [Next] for each dialog box that appears on your screen.
14. When the dialog appears with the [Finish] button, click [Finish].
15. Click [Yes] to restart your computer.
16. If the 'Add New Hardware Wizard' appears again follow the instructions as per steps 12, 13 and 14.
17. "SystemSoft CardWorks" is now uninstalled.

2.2 TranXit / TranXit2
The TranXit / TranXit2 application will no longer function properly once you upgrade your ThinkPad to Windows 98. If a version of TranXit is installed on your computer under Windows 95, it's recommended that this application be uninstalled before or after upgrading to Window 98.

Note: If you wish to continue using this software package, you need to upgrade to the full retail version of Intellisync for Windows 95/98. You can purchase the full version from Puma Technology's Web Site at http://www.pumatech.com.

To uninstall this application from your computer, please the follow the instructions listed below:

1. Start Windows 95/98.
2. Click: Start => Programs => TranXit => TranXit UnInstall.
3. When the dialog box titled "UnInstall" appears -- click on [Proceed] to remove all TranXit settings in the system.ini file and from the Program Manager.
4. When a "?" dialog pops-up, click [Yes] to restart computer and save all work.

2.3 IR Support for Microsoft Windows 95 V2.0 (380XD and 385XD models only)
If the Infrared support under Windows 95 is not uninstalled before upgrading, it may cause resource and device conflicts under Windows 98. Failing to remove this application before upgrading, may render your IR device inoperable for some applications, once you have upgraded your ThinkPad to Windows 98. Therefore, if this application is installed on your ThinkPad under Windows 95, you should uninstall the IR support for Microsoft Windows 95, version 2.0, before upgrading your computer to Windows 98.

To uninstall this application from your ThinkPad under Windows 95, please follow the instructions listed below:

1. Start Windows 95/98.
2. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel.
3. Double-click on the 'Add/Remove Programs' applet.
4. If "Infrared support for Windows 95 Version 2.0" is one of the applications listed in the 'Add/Remove Programs' dialog box, highlight "Infrared support for Windows 95 Version 2.0", and click on the [Add/Remove...] button.
5. Next, click on [YES] to restart your computer and for the new settings to take effect.

If you have already upgraded your computer to Windows 98, and want to uninstall "Infrared support for Windows 95 Version 2.0" application, please follow the instructions listed above, then to re-enable your system's IR device and ports, please follow the instructions provided below:

Reconfiguring Infrared communication device:

1. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel.
2. Click on the 'Add New Hardware' icon.
3. Follow the instructions the Hardware Wizard presents to you. Click on [Next] for the next 2 windows that appear on the screen. Windows will start to search for new hardware.
4. Select the "No, the device isn't in the list" option and click on [Next].
5. Select "No, I want to select the hardware from a list" and click on [Next] again.
6. Highlight 'Infrared devices' and click on [Next] for the next two windows that appear.
7. Select "Use default ports (recommended)" and click [Next] - The default COM and LPT port settings provide application support for your system's Infrared device.
8. Click on [Finish], and when the Hardware Wizard window closes, restart your computer. The next time you reboot your system, the IR device will be configured and function properly under Windows 98.

Updating the drivers for the Infrared serial COM and printing LPT ports:

1. Start Windows 98.
2. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel.
3. Double-click on the 'System' icon, then click on the 'Device Manager' tab.
4. If the Ports (COM & LPT) entry isn't expanded, double-click on it. Next, double-click on 'Virtual Infrared COM port'. This will open up a 'Properties" window for the Infrared serial (COM) port.
5. Click on the 'Driver' tab, then click on the [Update Driver...] button.
6. Click [Next] for the next 3 windows that appear on the screen the Infrared Serial COM port driver will be updated.
7. Click [Next], then [Finish] to update the driver. Finally, close the device's property window.
8. Repeat steps 4 through 7 to update the driver for the 'Infrared Printing (LPT) port'. However, in step 4, double-click the 'Virtual Infrared LPT port' entry instead. This time, the driver for the Infrared Printing (LPT) port in step 6 will be updated.
9. Close the "System Properties" window and restart your computer.


Step 3: Upgrading to Windows 98

3.1 Upgrading to Windows 98 (35-50 min)
When upgrading to Windows 98, it is recommended that you review the information provided in the Windows 98 upgrade/installation guide. When you do an upgrade installation over Windows 95, the Windows 98 Setup routine will assume your existing configuration is correct and will leave your system settings as they are. To upgrade from a version of Windows 95, please follow the instructions below:

Note: Before upgrading your ThinkPad to Windows 98, you are strongly recommended to get the latest System Program Service Diskette and update your system BIOS. Also, it's recommended that you obtain from IBM all updated software that you will need to install after upgrading to Windows 98. Lastly, IBM recommends that you use a diskette backup program on your system to create recovery diskettes of the preinstalled operating systems, device drivers, and applications. In addition, all important data files should be backed-up to diskette.

1. Start Windows 95.
2. Close any other Windows programs you might have open.
3. Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD-ROM drive.
4. Immediately after inserting the installation CD a window titled "Windows 98 CD-ROM" will appear on your screen. To upgrade your computer to Windows 98 now, click on [Yes].

If the "Windows 98 CD-ROM" window does not appear on your screen, please perform the following steps:
a. Click: Start=>Run.
b. Type D:\Win98\SETUP in the 'Open' field, where the letter (D:) is the drive designation for your computer's CD-ROM. Then, click [OK].

5. When the upgrade installation to Windows 98 starts, please follow any prompts that are presented on your screen until the installation has completed****. If you encounter problems setting up Windows 98, refer to the setup.txt file that comes with the installation CD.
6. When the upgrade process is completed, your computer will be ready to run Windows 98.

**** During the initial stages of the Windows 98 Setup process, a window panel titled "Save System Files" will appear on the screen. When this window appears, you will be asked if you want to save your existing MS-DOS and Windows system files. As a precaution, Microsoft has included this option to allow you to uninstall Windows 98 if necessary and resort back to Windows 95. Choosing this option requires you to have up to 50 MB of free disk space.

Note: If you are upgrading your ThinkPad to Windows 98 and are using the OS/2 Boot Manager, you may experience an exception error during the setup process. If this occurs, power-off and restart your computer. After restarting your computer, the Setup program will proceed with the installation of Windows 98.

3.2 Installing ThinkPad Utility for Windows 98 (2-3 min)
The ThinkPad Utility will allow you to select various features for your ThinkPad under Windows 98. Such features include: power management, Fuel-Gauge program, Personalization Editor, Alarm, and others. However, in order for your ThinkPad to fully utilize these features, you will need to install this utility on your computer after installing Windows 98. Three separate diskettes will need to be downloaded off of IBM's Web site.

Please follow the instructions listed below to install the ThinkPad Utility on your computer:

1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert the ThinkPad Utility Diskette for Windows 95 disk into the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start=>Run.
4. Type A:\SETUP in the 'Open' field and click on [OK].
5. Follow the instructions on the screen. When the "Install" window appears on your screen, click on [OK] to proceed with the installation.
6. Choose the path to copy the files to - we recommend using the default path. Then click on [OK].
7. The default choices are already checked on the "Installation Options" screen. Click on [Install] to start the installation process.
8. Insert the Utility Data Diskette II and Utility Diskette for DOS, Personalization disks into the diskette drive when prompted by the Setup program. After inserting each disk, confirm the drive letter is A:\ in the dialog box, and click on [OK].
9. When installation has completed, remove any disk from the diskette drive, and restart your computer.

3.3 Installing ThinkPad Video device driver (2-3 min)
Depending on what 380x/385x model you own, the Windows 95 video device driver will either automatically migrate to the Windows 98 environment or a video driver included in Windows 98 will be installed by the Windows 98 Setup program. However, these drivers offer limited/minimal functionality and support for your ThinkPad and should be replaced with an updated video device driver provided by IBM.

To install the driver, please follow the instructions listed below:

1. Start Windows 98.
2. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel.
3. Double-click on the 'Display' icon. This will bring up the "Display Properties" window.
4. Click on the 'Settings' tab, then click on the [Advanced...] button.
5. Next, click on the 'Adapter' tab, then on the [Change...] button.
6. Insert the Video Features Diskette (NM2160) for Windows 95/98 disk into the diskette drive.
7. Click on [Next], select 'Display a list of all drivers in a specific location...', then click on [Next].
8. Click on [Have Disk...].
9. Confirm the drive letter is A:\ in the dialog box, and click on [OK].
10. Highlight the "NeoMagic MagicGraph 128XD" entry and click on [OK] to close the "Select Device" window.
11. If a window titled, "Update Driver Warning", appears on your screen, click [YES] on this window to confirm that you want to use this driver on your computer.
12. Click on [Next] to start copying files to your computer. Continue to follow the prompts to 'Finish' the installation.
13. Close the "Advanced Properties" window, then the "Display Properties" window.
14. Remove the disk from the diskette drive and click on [Yes] to restart your computer.
