**** IMPORTANT NOTICE ****
This document pertains only to ThinkPad's as a standalone system i.e., UNDOCKED configuration. It is recommended that all attachable devices, except for an external diskette drive, be removed from your ThinkPad before installing Windows(1) 98. This includes all PCMCIA/CardBus cards (LAN, modem, flash memory, ATA, SCSI, etc. docking stations, port replicators, and PC Card Enablers. If any of these devices are attached to your ThinkPad during the installation process, Windows 98 may not run as explained in this document.

This document contains information to assist you in installing Windows 98 operating system on IBM(2) ThinkPad 310/D/E/ED(3) and 315/D/E/ED(3) systems. If your ThinkPad currently has Windows(1) 95 already installed and is working properly, IBM recommends that you upgrade your system to Windows 98 and follow the instructions in the Windows 98 Upgrade Guide.

STEP 1: Before Installing Windows 98

1.1 Backing up your software and data
This installation guide is designed to install Windows 98 from the start and by following these instructions you will lose all data previously on your hard drive. For those users who do not have a Recovery CD or Backup CD with CD-ROM drive, IBM strongly recommends that you use a diskette backup program on your system to create recovery diskettes of the preinstalled Windows 95 operating system, device drivers, and applications. In addition, IBM recommends that you back up all important data files to diskettes before installing Windows 98.

1.2 How to get updated software from IBM
Before installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad, you will need to obtain updated software from IBM.

IBM PC Company is providing the updated software through several other channels as follows. It is suggested you obtain the latest software so that you can set up Windows 98 on your ThinkPad systems with the information described in this document:

1. WWW server on Internet
The home page for IBM PC Company file matrixes is: http://www.pc.ibm.com/support/thinkpad/tpopsys.html. Please note in each of the installation sections under step 2, there are icons that will direct you to the location where you obtain the software.

2. FTP site

1.3 Updating your ThinkPad System BIOS
Before installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad, you are strongly recommended to get the latest ThinkPad System Program Service Diskette and to update your system BIOS. Otherwise, Windows 98 may not run as explained in this document.

1.3.1 Building the System Program Service Diskette
To build the System Program Service Diskette, please follow the instructions listed below:

1. Download the file to a temporary directory on your hard drive.
2. Insert a blank formatted disk into the diskette drive.
3. Run the file by double-clicking on it from Windows Explorer.
4. Follow the instructions on the screen and it will expand the image onto your diskette drive.

1.3.32 Using the System Program Service Diskette (2-3 min)
After creating the System Program Service Diskette, please follow the instructions provided below:

Note: You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program.

1. Print or display on another computer the instructions that accompany the System Program Service Diskette.
2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
3. Insert the System Program Service Diskette into the diskette drive and turn on the computer.
4. Press 1 key to update your computer's system BIOS.
5. When the following message appears on your screen, "System program has been updated successfully.", remove the System Program Service Diskette disk from the diskette drive and power down and restart your computer.

Warning: Do not turn off your computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF YOUR COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.


STEP 2: Installing Windows 98

2.1 Installing Windows 98 (35-50 min)
When installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad, it's recommended that you read any readme files that are available on the Windows 98 installation CD. These files will have important information about installing Windows 98.

To install Windows 98 on your ThinkPad from a blank hard drive, please follow the instructions provided below:

Note: Before installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad, you are strongly recommended to get the latest System Program Service Diskette and update your system BIOS. Also, it's recommended that you obtain from IBM all updated software that you will need to install on your ThinkPad after installing Windows 98. Lastly, IBM recommends that you use a diskette backup program on your system to create recovery diskettes of the preinstalled Windows 95 operating system, device drivers, and applications if you do not have a Recovery CD or Back-up CD with CD-ROM drive on your system. In addition, all important data files should be backed-up onto diskettes.

1. Boot into DOS.
2. Insert the Windows 98 Upgrade/Installation CD into the CD-ROM drive.
3. At the DOS prompt, type format C: and press ENTER, where the letter (C:) is the drive designation for your computer's hard drive that you want to install Windows 98 onto.

Warning: Formatting will destroy all information and data on that specified hard drive. Therefore, executing the command format C: at the DOS prompt will destroy all information, including the operating system, on the C: drive.

4. Next, at the DOS prompt, type D:\Win98\SETUP, where the letter (D:) is the drive designation for your computer's CD-ROM.
5. Press ENTER and follow any prompts that are presented on your screen until the installation has completed. If you encounter problems setting up Windows 98, refer to the setup.txt file that comes with the installation CD.
6. When the installation process is completed, your computer will be ready to run Windows 98.

Note: If you are installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad and are using the OS/2 Boot Manager, you may experience an exception error during the setup process. If this occurs, power-off and restart your computer. After restarting your computer, the Setup program will proceed with the installation of Windows 98.

2.2 Installing the ThinkPad Notebook Manager Utility (1-2 min)
The ThinkPad Notebook Manager Utility is not included in Windows 98, and therefore, will not be automatically installed by the Windows 98 Setup program. This utility will allow you to view and manage different aspects and settings on your ThinkPad. It will also provide you with information about your computer and will allow you to make changes to your system's BIOS settings under Windows 98.

To install the utility on your computer, please follow the instructions listed below:

1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert the Notebook Utility Manager Diskette for Windows 95 disk into the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start => Run.
4. Type A:\SETUP in the 'Open' field and click on OK.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen. Click on Next of the 'Welcome to Notebook Manager' screen to start the Setup program.
6. Next, choose the path to copy the files to - we recommend using the default path (C:\Program Files\Notebook Manager\). Then click on Next - the Setup program will start to copy files to your computer.
7. Click on OK to confirm installation has completed.
8. Remove any disk from the diskette drive, and restart your computer.

2.3 Installing the ThinkPad SafeOFF Utility (1-2 min)
The ThinkPad SafeOFF Utility is not included in Windows 98, and therefore, will not be automatically installed by the Windows 98 Setup program. Once this utility is installed on your ThinkPad, it will "protect" you and your system from inadvertently shutting power off to your computer when the power switch is pressed. When the power switch is pressed, the system won't immediately shutdown, but instead a message will be displayed notifying you if you really want to shutdown your computer.

To install the utility on your computer, please follow the instructions listed below:

1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert the SafeOFF Utility Diskette for Windows 95 disk into the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start => Run.
4. Type A:\SETUP in the 'Open' field and click on OK.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen. Click on Next of the 'Welcome to SafeOFF' screen to start the Setup program.
6. Next, choose the path to copy the files to - we recommend using the default path (C:\Program Files\SafeOFF\). Then click on Next - the Setup program will start to copy files to your computer.
7. Click on OK to confirm installation has completed.
8. Remove any disk from the diskette drive, and restart your computer.

2.4 Installing the ThinkPad Sleep Manager Utility (1-2 min)
The ThinkPad Sleep Manager is not included in Windows 98, and therefore, will not be automatically installed by the Windows 98 Setup program. To allow your ThinkPad to enter hibernation mode, you will need to install the latest version of the Sleep Manager on your computer once you have installed Windows 98.

To install the utility on your computer, please follow the instructions listed below:

1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert the Sleep manager Diskette for Windows 98 disk into the diskette driver.
3. Click: Start => Run.
4. Type A:\SETUP in the 'Open' field and click on OK.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen. Click on Next of the 'Welcome to Sleep Manager' screen to start the Setup program.
6. Next, choose the path to copy the files to - we recommend using the default path (C:\Program Files\Sleep Manager\). Then click on Next - the Setup program will start to copy files to your computer.
7. Click on OK to confirm installation has completed.
8. Remove any disk from the diskette drive, and restart your computer.

2.5.a Installing ThinkPad Audio device driver (2-3 min)
An audio device driver for the ThinkPad 310x/315x models is included in Windows 98, and is automatically installed by the Windows 98 Setup program. However, this driver offers limited/minimal functionality and support for your ThinkPad and should be replaced with an audio device driver provided by IBM.

To install this driver on your computer, please follow the instructions provided below:

1. Start Windows 98.
2. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel.
3. Double-click on the System icon, then click on the Device Manager tab.
4. Click on the + mark for 'Sound, video, and game controllers', then double click on Yamaha OPL3-SAx WDM Driver.
5. Next, click on the Driver tab, then click on Update Driver....
6. Click on Next, select the "Display a list of the drivers in a specific location..." option, then click on Next.
7. Insert Disk #1 of the Audio Driver Diskette for Windows 98 into the diskette driver.
8. Click on Have Disk....
9. Confirm the drive letter is A:\ in the dialog box, then click on OK.
10. Select YAMAHA OPL-SAx Sound System and click on OK. This will close the "Select Device" window.
11. Click on Next -- this will start copying files to your computer.
12. When the window titled "Copying Files..." appears on your screen looking for the 'vsgm.vxd' file, insert Disk #2 of the Audio Driver Diskette for Windows 98 into the diskette driver.
13. Confirm the drive letter is A:\ in the dialog box, then click on OK.
14. Next, click on Finish, close the "Properties" window, then the "System Properties" window.
15. Remove any disk from the diskette drive, and restart your computer.

Note: Disk #3 contains the Help file in various languages on how to use and configure the OPL3-SAx settings.

2.5.b Installing ThinkPad Software Support driver (2-3 min)
Enables or updates the audio software(Yamaha Station). To be used in conjunction with the Audio Driver Diskette.

To install this driver on your computer, please follow the instructions provided below:

1. Insert the Audio Support Software diskette into the diskette drive.
2. Click on Start; then click on Run....
3. Type A:\SETUP in the "Run..." dialog box and click OK.
4. Click on Next to continue; it then prompts you where you would like to install the drivers. To accept the default, click on Next.
5. It will then prompt you for the folder which you want to add program icons to. To accept the default, click on Next.
6. After it is finished installing, click on OK to continue.

2.6 Installing the ThinkPad Patch Utility (1-2 min)
To allow your computer under Windows 98 to "wakeup" on an incoming call using an external PCMCIA modem card, you will need to install a TDial Utility on your computer.

To install the utility on your computer, please follow the instructions listed below:

1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert the Patch Utility Diskette for Windows 95 disk into the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start => Run.
4. Type A:\Tdial\Setup in the 'Open' field and click on OK.
5. Click on Yes of the "TDial Setup" window to install the TDial Utility.
6. Remove any disk from the diskette drive and click on Yes to restart your computer and for the new settings to take effect.

2.7 Installing ThinkPad Video device driver (4-5 min)
A video device driver for the ThinkPad 310x/315x models is included in Windows 98, and is automatically installed by the Windows 98 Setup program. However, this driver offers limited/minimal functionality and support for your ThinkPad and should be replaced with a video device driver provided by IBM. Using the native Windows 98 video driver may impair your computer from fully utilizing its video capabilities for such features as playback for MPEG movie files.

To install this driver on your computer, please follow the instructions listed below:

1. Start Windows 98.
2. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel.
3. Double-click on the Display icon. This will bring up the "Display Properties" window.
4. Click on the Settings tab, then click on the Advanced... button.
5. Next, click on the Adapter tab, then on the Change... button.
6. Insert the Display Driver Diskette for Windows 95 disk into the diskette drive.
7. Click on Next, select the "Display a list of all drivers in a specific location..." option, then click on Next.
8. Click on Have Disk....
9. Confirm the drive letter is A:\ in the dialog box, and click on OK.
10. Highlight the Chips and Tech. 65550 PCI entry and click on OK of the "Select Drive" window.
11. When the "Update Driver Warning" window appears on your screen, click on Yes to confirm you want to use this driver on your computer.
12. Click on Next to start copying the files to your system.
13. Next, click on Finish, close the "Advanced Properties" window, then the "Display Properties" window.
14. Remove any disk from the diskette drive, and click on Yes to restart your machine.
15. After your computer restarts open a MS DOS-PROMPT.
16. Change your current directory to the "SYSTEM" directory by typing at the prompt, cd system.
17. Next, rename the 'chtdd32.dll' file. Type at the prompt, rename chtdd32.dll chtdd32.w95.
18. Restart your computer.
