Step 2: Upgrading to Windows 98
2.1 Upgrading to Windows 98 (35-50 min)
When upgrading to Windows 98, it is recommended that you review the information provided in the Windows 98 upgrade/installation guide. When you do an upgrade installation over Windows 95, the Windows 98 Setup routine will assume your existing configuration is correct and will leave your system settings as they are. To upgrade from a version of Windows 95, please follow the instructions below:
Note: Before upgrading your ThinkPad to Windows 98, you are strongly recommended to get the latest System Program Service Diskette and update your system BIOS. Also, it's recommended that you obtain from IBM all updated software that you will need to install after upgrading to Windows 98. Lastly, IBM recommends that you use a diskette backup program on your system to create recovery diskettes of the preinstalled operating systems, device drivers, and applications. In addition, all important data files should be backed-up to diskette.
1. Start Windows 95.
2. Close any other Windows programs you might have open.
3. Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD-ROM drive.
4. Immediately after inserting the installation CD a window titled "Windows 98 CD-ROM" will appear on your screen. To upgrade your computer to Windows 98 now, click on [Yes].
If the "Windows 98 CD-ROM" window does not appear on your screen, please perform the following steps:
a. Click: Start => Run.
b. Type D:\Win98\SETUP in the 'Open' field, where the letter (D:) is the drive designation for your computer's CD-ROM. Then, click [OK].
5. When the upgrade installation to Windows 98 starts, please follow any prompts that are presented on your screen until the installation has completed(4). If you encounter problems setting up Windows 98, refer to the setup.txt file that comes with the installation CD.
6. When the upgrade process is completed, your computer will be ready to run Windows 98.
(4) During the initial stages of the Windows 98 Setup process, a window panel titled "Save System Files" will appear on the screen. When this window appears, you will be asked if you want to save your existing MS-DOS and Windows system files. As a precaution, Microsoft has included this option to allow you to uninstall Windows 98 if necessary and resort back to Windows 95. Choosing this option requires you to have up to 50 MB of free disk space.
Note: If you are upgrading your ThinkPad to Windows 98 and are using the OS/2 Boot Manager, you may experience an exception error during the setup process. If this occurs, power-off and restart your computer. After restarting your computer, the Setup program will proceed with the installation of Windows 98.
2.2 Installing the ThinkPad Sleep Manager Utility (1-2 min)
The Windows 95 version of the ThinkPad Sleep Manager will automatically migrate to the Windows 98 environment. However, this version of the utility will not function under Windows 98.
