TP 570 - Installing Windows 98 and its device drivers

Applicable to: World-Wide

This document describes the installation procedures for Windows 98 and its software for your computer using the Software Selections CD.
Note: You can install Windows 98 by restoring the original preloaded image from the Recovery CD. Refer to the User's Reference for how to use the Recovery CD.

Overall procedure


  1. Have the Windows 98 installation package in hand.
  2. Back up your software and personal data files on the hard disk.
  3. Install Windows 98.
  4. You will need to have the following drivers:

    Utility Driver II for Windows 95/98


    Note: If you have already formatted the hard drive, you can download the drivers from the links in the above table.

    Installing Microsoft Windows 98
    1. Copy all the cabinet files and installation programs in Windows 98 retail CD-ROM to your HDD as follows.
    1-1. Make a temporary directory ( for instance, C:\WIN98) and make sure enough hard disk space is
    available to store the cabinet files and installation programs (the required free space vary depending on
    the language of Windows 98).
    1-2. Copy all the cabinet (.CAB) files and installation programs from \WIN98 directory of Windows 98
    retail CD.
    Type "COPY src_cd:\WIN98\*.* tgt_drv:\tgt_dir" and press Enter. Where src_cd: Drive letter of
    CD-ROM drive (e.g. D,E ..) tgt_drv:\tgt_dir: Drive letter and temporary directory made in 1-1 (e.g.
    C:\WIN98)

    2. Copy updated INF files from the Windows 98 Supplement Diskette to the temporary directory created in step 1-1.
    2-1. Insert the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette into a floppy drive.
    2-2. Type "COPY A:\RTMINF\*.* tgt_drv:\tgt_dir" and press Enter. Where tgt_drv:\tgt_dir is the Drive
    Letter and temporary directory made in step 1.1. (e.g. C:\WIN98)3. Start Installation from the temporary directory
    3-1. Run "Setup.exe" in the temporary directory created in step 1-1.
    3-2. Refer to the Windows 98 documentation and instructions on the screen to complete the installation.

    Full installation on a FAT 16 drive:
    About 225 MB disk space is required. Depending on your system configuration and the options you select, the required space ranges from 165 MB to 355 MB.

    Full installation on a FAT 32 drive:
    About 175 MB disk space is required. Depending on your system configuration and the options you select, the required space ranges from 140 MB to 225 MB.

    Apply APM2APM.reg information onto Windows 98

    1. Boot the system
    2. Click on Start -> Run ...
    3. Type A:\APM2APM\APM2APM.reg and click OK. Following Registry Editor's windows appears. "Are you sure you want to add the information A:\apm2apm\apm2apm.reg to the registry?"
    4. Select Yes. Successful windows message is displayed.
    5. Select OK to exit the registry editor screen.


    ThinkPad Configuration program installation

    1. Start Windows 95/98.
    2. Extract the drivers onto the hard disk by running the file. To do this, you can select Start->Run and specify the path and filename of the file you downloaded, or you can double-click on the file in Windows Explorer. This will extract the drivers.
    3. Click on Start -> Run...
    4. Type in "x:\<path name>\SETUP.EXE". Then click on OK. where x: is the drive letter and <path name> is the path you extracted the files to. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\W98\UTILITY\
    5. Follow the instructions on the screen.


    Display driver installation

    1. Boot Windows 98.
    2. Extract the drivers onto the hard drive.
    3. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
    4. Double-click on the Display icon.
    5. Select the Settings tab.
    6. Click on the Advanced... button.
    7. Select the Adapter tab.
    8. Click on the Change... button. The 'Update Device Driver Wizard' runs.
    9. Click on the Next button.
    10. Select the option Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want. and click the Next button.
    11. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Then click on OK button. Then video driver list appears. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\W9X\DISPLAY.
    12. Windows 98 finds 'NeoMagic MagicMedia 256AV' then click on the OK button. If Windows 98 displays an 'Update Driver Warning' message box, click on the Yes button to continue the installation.
    13. Make sure the location is same one that you specified above then click on the Next button. Windows 98 copies all the driver files to the hard disk.
    14. After the driver files are copied, click on the Finish button.
    15. Click on the Close button to close the Adapter tab.
    16. Select the desired color depth and resolution.
    17. Click on the Close button to close the 'Display Properties' window.
    18. Click on the Yes button to restart Windows 98.


    Audio device driver installation

    1. Start Windows 98.
    2. Extract the Audio drivers onto the hard drive.
    3. Click on Start -> Run...
    4. Type in "x:\<path name>\SETUP.EXE". Then click on OK. where x: is the drive letter and <path name> is the path you extracted the files to. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\W9X\AUDIO
    5. Click on the Uninstall Crystal Driver button at the pop-up window, and then select Shut Down. Re-start Windows 98.
    6. When Windows 98 detects "Unknown Device", select Next button. It will default to "Search for best driver for your device", press the Next button. This window should have search "Specify a location" checked.
    7. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted and click on the Next button. The Audio device list appears. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\W9X\AUDIO\ It will then identify the device as a "Crystal SoundFusion(TM) PCI Audio Accelerator" with the location of the driver set to "CWCAUDIO.INF", press the Next button.
    8. When coping completes, press the Finish button.


    TrackPoint driver installation

    1. Start Windows 98
    2. Extract the TrackPoint drivers for Windows 95/98/NT onto the hard drive.
    3. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
    4. Double-click on the System icon.
    5. Click on the Device Manager tab at the top of the "System Properties" window.
    6. Double-click on the Mouse.
    7. Double-click on either PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port or PS/2 TrackPoint whichever choice appears in the list.
    8. Click on the Driver tab.
    9. Click on the Update Driver... button. The "Update Device Driver Wizard" runs.
    10. Click on Next.
    11. Click on Display a list of all the drivers in a specific location, so you can select the driver you want.
    12. Click on Next.
    13. Click on Have Disk.
    14. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\WIN\TPOINT\. Then click on OK button. Then mouse driver list appears.
    15. Click on PS/2 TrackPoint in the list.
    16. Click on Next.
    17. Click on Next.
    18. Click on Finish in the "Update Device Driver Wizard" window.
    19. Restart your computer to make the new settings effective.


    ThinkPad modem installation

    1. Start Windows 95/98 or Windows NT 4.0.
    2. Extract the drivers onto the hard disk.
    3. Click on Start -> Run...
    4. Type in "x:\<path name>\SETUP.EXE". Then click on OK. where x: is the drive letter and <path name> is the path you extracted the files to. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\WIN\MODEM
    5. Follow the instructions on the screen.


    ThinkPad UltraBay hot/warm swap driver

    1. Start Windows 95/98.
    2. Extract the drivers onto the hard disk.
    3. Click on Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
    4. Double click on the Add New Hardware icon.
    5. At the 'Begin installing your new hardware window, Select Next.
    6. At the 'search for new Plug and Play devices' windows, click Next.
    7. At the 'Is the device that you want to install listed below?' window, select 'No, the device isn't in the list.' and click on Next.
    8. When prompted 'Do you want Windows to search for your new hardware?' choose 'No, I want to select the hardware from a list' and click Next.
    9. Under Hardware types, select Other devices and click Next.
    10. At the 'Select the manufacturer' window, click on the Have Disk... button.
    11. Specify the directory where the driver files are extracted and click on the OK button. The Driver list will appear. Default path is C:\DRIVERS\W9X\BASEATCH\
    12. Select ThinkPad UltraBase Hot-Attach Driver and click Next.
    13. Click the Finish button.
    14. Restart the operating system.
