Applicable to: World-Wide

Revision 1.08 6-12-98

For a list of considerations when running Windows 98, click here.

**** IMPORTANT NOTICE ****
This document pertains only to ThinkPad's as a standalone system - i.e., UNDOCKED configuration. It's recommended that all attachable devices, except for an external diskette drive, a CD-ROM drive and a SCSI or PCI card, be removed from your ThinkPad before upgrading to Windows 98. This includes all PCMCIA/CARDBUS LAN, modem, and ATA cards, docking stations, port replicators, and PC Card enablers. If any of these devices are attached to your ThinkPad during the upgrade installation, Windows 98 may not run as explained in this document.

Since the 560x family is not equipped with an internal CD-ROM, an external CD-ROM with a SCSI/IDE PCMCIA card will need to be attached to your computer during the upgrade installation. IBM has successfully tested the following physical configurations on the 560x family when upgraded to Windows 98:

o Sony 6X CD-ROM with Adaptec SCSI II PCMCIA card.
o IBM 20X max CD-ROM with IBM IDE PCMCIA card.

If a different configuration is used than what is listed above, Windows 98 may not run as explained in this document.

This document contains information to assist you in upgrading from Microsoft(1) Windows(1) 95 to Windows(1) 98 operating system on IBM(2) ThinkPad 560, 560E, and 560X systems.

The features the PC Card Director provided on your ThinkPad under Windows 95, will not be needed on Windows 98. Windows 98 offers improved PC Card/CardBus support that makes it easier for the OS to discover information about resources and configuring these devices. 2.3 TranXit / TranXit2 - applies to 560/560E/560X (2 mins)
The TranXit and TranXit 2 application will no longer function properly once you upgrade your ThinkPad to Windows 98. It's recommended that the application be uninstalled from your computer before or after upgrading to Window 98.

Note: If you wish to continue using this software package, you need to upgrade to the full retail version of Intellisync for Windows 95/98. You can purchase the full version from Puma Technology's Web Site at http://www.pumatech.com.

Step 3. Upgrading to Windows 98 (35-50 mins)

When upgrading to Windows 98, it is recommended that you review the information provided in the Windows 98 upgrade / installation guide. When you do an upgrade installation over Windows 95, the Windows 98 Setup routine will assume your existing configuration is correct and will leave your system settings as they are. To upgrade from an earlier version of Windows 95, please follow the instructions below:

Note: Before installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad, you are strongly recommended to get the latest System Program Service Diskette and update your system BIOS. Also, it's recommended that you obtain from IBM all updated software that you will need to install after installing Windows 98. Lastly, IBM recommends that you use a diskette backup program on your system to create recovery diskettes of the preinstalled operating system's device drivers, and applications if you do not have a Recovery CD or Back-up CD with CD-ROM drive on your system.

1. Start Windows 95.
2. Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD-ROM drive.
3. Close any other Windows programs you might have open.
4. Immediately after inserting the installation CD, a window titled "Windows 98 CD-ROM" will appear on your screen. To upgrade your computer to Windows 98 now, click on Yes.

If the "Windows 98 CD-ROM" window does not appear on your screen please perform the following steps:
a. Click: Start=>Run.
b. Type D:\Win98\SETUP in the 'Open' field, where the letter (D:) is the drive designation for your computer's CD-ROM. Then, click OK.

5. When the upgrade installation to Windows 98 starts, please follow any prompts that are presented on the screen until the installation has completed(4).
6. When the upgrade process is completed, your computer will be ready to run Windows 98.

(4) During the initial stages of the Windows 98 Setup routine, a window panel titled "Save System Files" will appear on the screen. When this appears, you'll be asked if you want to save your existing MS-DOS and Windows system files. As a precaution, Microsoft has included this option to allow you to uninstall Windows 98 if necessary and resort back to Windows 95. Choosing this option requires you to have up to 50 MB of free disk space.

Note: If you are using the OS/2 Boot Manager to upgrade your computer to Windows 98, you may experience an exception error when setting up the process. If this occurs, power-off and restart your computer. After restarting, the setup routine will proceed with the installation of Windows 98.

3.1 Installing ThinkPad Video device driver for Windows 98 - applies to 560/560E (2 mins)
The video device driver offered under Windows 95 is automatically transferred to Windows 98 when you upgrade. The latest version of the ThinkPad Utility will continue to provide the same functionality, plus some enhanced features, under Windows 98 as it did under Windows 95. This still includes the ThinkPad Configuration, Fuel Gauge Program, and Personalization Editor. However, in order for your ThinkPad to fully utilize all of the features under Windows 98, you must install the latest version of this program on your ThinkPad after upgrading to Windows 98.

Please follow the instructions below on how to install the ThinkPad Utility on your system:

1. Start Windows 95/Windows 98.
2. Insert the Utility Diskette for Windows 95 into the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start=>Run.

5. Follow the instructions on the screen - since you are overwriting the older version of the utility, you'll want to copy the new files into the same directory as the old one, (default C:\ThinkPad). By doing this, any existing shortcut you had to the older ThinkPad Utility program will successfully launch the newly installed version.
6. The default choices are already checked on the "Installation Options" screen. Click on Install to start the installation process.
7. Insert the Utility Data Diskette (III) and Utility Diskette for DOS and Personalization diskettes when prompted by the Setup program.
8. After the installation has completed, remove the diskette and restart your computer.
