TP 600,770/E/ED - Considerations for Windows 98

Considerations
NOTE: IBM does not warrant that every function and operation described in the IBM or Microsoft® documentation will work or be free from limitations when the Windows 98 Upgrade is used with your ThinkPad computer. This document contains a list of hints, tips, and limitations that IBM is aware of on specific ThinkPad models with Windows 98 Upgrade installed. If you have not already installed Windows 98 please follow the ThinkPad Windows 98 Upgrade or Installation instructions available on the IBM Web Site.

Plug and Play Functionality
Repeated removal and hot insertion of an IDE CD-ROM and/or DVD ROM shows the device not functioning.
Models: ThinkPad 770 and 770E/ED models.

Issue: A CD-ROM or DVD ROM device located in the UltraBay is configured as the secondary IDE channel (with IRQ 15 and I/O address 170 resources). When this device is hot removed and re-inserted consecutive times, an error may occur indicating that this device does not work (e.g. 'Not ready reading drive A' or 'F:\ is not accessible').

Cause: This issue occurs due to the lack of IRQ 15 resource that should be allocated for the UltraBay IDE device. When the IDE device is removed for the first time, IRQ 15 is consumed by another device (a tape backup device).

Resolution: Rename the original DRVWPPQT.VxD file located in the windows\system\iosubsys directory to DRVWPPQT.BAK and restart your computer. Renaming this driver file will inhibit the above behavior and the secondary IDE device will allocate/deallocate IRQ 15 normally.

Note: This driver is for the Tape Backup device. If you encounter any issues by renaming this file, please restore the file to its original name. However, the issue described above will reemerge. Please contact Microsoft if you need to enable both functions (Tape Backup and CD-ROM/DVD ROM hot-swap).

Display Driver and Multiple Monitor Support
The LCD or video display is not behaving normally.
Models: ThinkPad 760x, 765x, and 770x models.

Issue: The screen size changes when the system is warm docked.

Cause: At the point of wake up and docking initialization, Windows 98 detects a new configuration and sets the display to a default VGA mode. This occurs only when the configuration is new.

Resolution: Reset the screen size back to its original configuration by using the Display Properties under Windows 98.

Multimedia
DVD and MPEG1/MPEG2 functions do not work properly.
Models: ThinkPad 770 and 770E/ED models with DVD support.

Issue: If while using the CompCore SoftDVD program, you select the Repeat option to continuously play MPEG1/MPEG2 movie files, the ThinkPad will stop working (the screen will appear to be frozen) after an extended period of time.

Cause: This is caused by the SoftDVD application under the Windows 98 environment.

Resolution: Do not use the Repeat option of the SoftDVD application to play the same movie clip for an extended period of time.

Note: This issue only exists on US version of the SoftDVD application on the ThinkPad 770x models.

DVD and MPEG1/MPEG2 functions do not work properly.
Models: ThinkPad 770 and 770E/ED models.

Issue: A protection fault will occur when MPEG1/MPEG2 movie files are played using Media Player with 1600x1200, 16 bit mode on an external display. This issue occurs only on this screen color and resolution configuration.

Cause: This is due to differences in the internal display mode setting under Windows 98.

Resolution: Use ActiveMovie for playing MPEG1 movie files, or change the color depth and screen resolution to a different configuration setting than what is listed above.

ThinkPad Modem Support
ThinkPad Modem does not work.
Models: All ThinkPad models with a built-in modem.

Issue: The system's modem or COM port devices do not function and the following message appears on the screen: "device is not responding, make sure the device is plugged in...".

Cause: The system's Infrared(IR) or Fast Infrared(FIR) port may be sharing the same Interrupt Request (IRQ) as the system's communications port or modem.

Resolution: To free up the IRQ resource, disable the IR device. If you want the IR device enabled, you should use the Windows 98 Device Manager to manually set the IRQ for either the IR port or the device sharing an IRQ with (COM port or modem) and change them so that the IR port has its own discrete IRQ. On some ThinkPads there may not be any free IRQ's available, in this case, you will need to disable the IR or another device (such as a COM or LPT port) in order to free up an IRQ.

ThinkPad modem does not work.
Models: ThinkPad 600 and 770x models with ThinkPad Modem telephony support.

Issue: The ThinkPad Modem is detected as a Unknown Device after being removed and redetected through the Windows 98 Device Manager.

Cause: If the Windows 98 native MWAVMDM.INF file is located in the \Windows\INF directory, Windows 98 does not detect the ThinkPad Modem.

Resolution: Install the latest version of the ThinkPad Modem software on your ThinkPad. Please refer to the ThinkPad 600/770x Windows 98 Upgrade/Installation Guide for instructions on how to install this software on your computer.

Preloaded application considerations for Windows 98
ConfigSafe
Due to differences between Windows 95 and Windows 98, any snapshots taken with ConfigSafe under Windows 95 are incompatible with Windows 98 and will cause system problems (unstable or crashes) if the Windows 95 snapshot is restored under Windows 98 (including the Windows 95 initial configuration snapshot). It is recommended that before upgrading to Windows 98, that you remove ConfigSafe from the system and then re-install it after the upgrade process is complete. This should eliminate any potential problems.

To remove ConfigSafe:
Click on Start ==>Program ==>ConfigSafe ==>ConfigSafe Uninstall.

Only versions 1.05.03 or later are fully compatible with Windows 98. If you are running an earlier version, you can contact Artisoft at the web addresses below if you would like more information about purchasing an updated version that is compatible with Windows 98 or may call them at 520-670-7100.

Update Connector
Only version 2.01 or later of Update Connector is supported under Windows 98. To see which version of Update Connector you are running, in Update Connector, click on Help and then Program Information from the menu bar. To download the latest version of Update Connector, click here. Note: This file is 8MB in size so download times will be long.

Note: If you have uninstalled IE3.0 before installing Windows 98, you will need to reinstall Update Connector.

Digital Video Producer
Version 5.0b is the earliest version of Digital Video Producer that is recommended to be used when running Windows 98. If you are running version 5.0 of DVP but not sure if it is version 5.0, 5.0a, or 5.0b, you can check by following the procedure outlined below:

1. In Windows Explorer, go to the C:\Program Files\Asymetrix\DVP50 directory.
2. Right click on the file DVP50.EXE and select Properties.
3. Click on the Version tab.

If you are running version 5.0, you can download a patch to update you to version 5.0b. To download the patch, you can go to Asymetrix's web page at http://www.asymetrix.com/products/dvp5/patch.html.

RingCentral
Versions 4.10.94 and below are not supported under Windows 98. To determine which version of Ring Central you have, click on Menu in Ring Central, then click on About Ring Central. An update is available to update your version of Ring Central (if you are running a version prior to 4.10.94) is available for download. This update is a two part procedure. First you must update your current version (which should be version 4.10.78, 4.10.82, or 4.10.85) to version 4.10.87. After updating to 4.10.87, there is a second update to take you version 4.10.104 which will work with Windows 98. Click here, to download the update to get you to version 4.10.87.
