**** IMPORTANT NOTICE ****
This document pertains only to ThinkPad's as a standalone system i.e., UNDOCKED configuration. This means before installing Windows 98 your ThinkPad, remove all attachable devices. This includes all PCMCIA/CARDBUS cards (LAN, Modem, ATA, SCSI, etc.) docking stations, port replicators, and PC Card Enablers. If any of these devices are attached to your ThinkPad during the installation process, Windows 98 may not run as explained in this document.
Installing Windows 98
This document contains information to assist you in installing Windows(1) 98 operating system on IBM(2) ThinkPad 600, 770, 770E and 770ED(3) systems. If you are currently using Windows 95 on your system and it is working correctly IBM recommends you use the Upgrade Guide.

STEP 1: Before Installing Windows 98
1.1 Backing up your software and data
This installation guide is designed to install Windows 98 from the beginning and by following these instructions you will lose the data previously on your Hard Disk. For those users who do not have a Recovery CD or Backup CD with CD-ROM drive, IBM strongly recommends that you use a diskette backup program on your system to create recovery diskettes of the preinstalled Windows 95 operating systems device drivers and applications. In addition, IBM recommends that you back up all important data files to diskettes before installing Windows 98.
1.2 How to get updated software from IBM
Before installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad, you will need to obtain updated software from IBM.
Here's a list of the software you'll need to obtain for your system before installing Windows 98:

Note 1: The DVD Movie application and Region diskette are not available for download. Make sure that you have created backup of these diskettes from your system before proceeding.

1.3 Updating your ThinkPad System BIOS (2 mins)
Before installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad, you are strongly recommended to get the latest ThinkPad System Program Service Diskette and to update your system BIOS. Otherwise, Windows 98 may not run as explained in this document.
1.3.1 Download the System Service Diskette
To determine which System Program Service Diskette to download from IBM's Web site, please match your machine's model from the corresponding 600/770x models listed below:

1.3.2 Creating the diskette
1. Download the file to a temporary directory on your hard drive.
2. Insert a blank formatted diskette into the floppy drive.
3. Run the file by double clicking on it from Windows Explorer.
4. Follow the instructions on the screen and it will expand the image onto your diskette drive.
After creating the System Program Service Diskette follow the instructions below:
Note: You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program. Also, if your computer is attached to a port replicator, docking station, or PC Card Enabler, turn off your computer and detach it before proceeding.
1. Print or display on another computer the instructions that accompany the System Program Service Diskette.
2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
3. Insert the System Program Service Diskette into the diskette drive and turn on the computer.
4. Select "Read this first..." from the menu and carefully read the information that appears.
5. Press the ESC key to return to the menu.
6. Select "Update system program" and follow the instruction on the screen.
Warning: Do not turn off or suspend your computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND YOUR COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.
After the BIOS update has completed, perform the following steps to make the changes effective:
7. Remove the System Program Service Diskette from the diskette drive and press 'Enter' to restart your computer.
8. Press and hold the 'F1' key until the 'Easy-Setup' menu appears.
9. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
10. Select 'Config', then press 'Initialize'.
11. Select 'OK' to initialize the system.
12. Click on Exit
13. Select Restart and click on OK. Your computer restarts.
1.4 ACPI BIOS
The ThinkPad 770E/ED and the ThinkPad 600 models both support ACPI. Information on installing your system with ACPI support will be coming soon!!
STEP 2: Installing Windows 98
When installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad, it's recommended that you read any readme files that are available on the Windows 98 installation CD. These files will have important information about installing Windows 98.
Note: If you are using the OS/2 Boot Manager to upgrade your computer to Windows 98, you may experience an exception error when setting up the process. If this occurs, power-off and restart your computer. After restarting, the setup routine will proceed with the installation of Windows 98.
To install Windows 98 on your ThinkPad from a blank hard drive, please follow the instructions below:
Note: Before installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad, you are strongly recommended to get the latest System Program Service Diskette and update your system BIOS. Also, it's recommended that you obtain from IBM all updated software that you will need to install after installing Windows 98. Lastly, IBM recommends that you use a diskette backup program on your system to create recovery diskettes of the preinstalled operating systems, device drivers, and applications if you do not have a Recovery CD or Back-up CD with CD-ROM drive on your system.
1. Boot into DOS.
2. Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD-ROM drive.
3. At the DOS prompt, type format C: and press ENTER, where the letter C: is the drive designation for your computer's hard drive that you want to install Windows 98 onto.
Warning: Formatting will destroy all information and data on that specified hard drive. Therefore, executing the command format C: at the DOS prompt will destroy all information, including the operating system, on the C: drive.
4. Next, at the DOS prompt, type D:\Win98\SETUP, where the letter (D:) is the drive designation for your computer's CD-ROM.
5. Press ENTER and follow any prompts that are presented on your screen until the installation has completed. If you encounter problems setting up Windows 98, refer to the setup.txt file that comes with the installation CD.
6. When the installation process is completed, your computer will be ready to run Windows 98.
2.1 Installing ThinkPad Modem for Windows 98 - applies to 600/770x models with ThinkPad Modem (8 mins)
The ThinkPad Modem software is not included in Windows 98, and therefore, will not be automatically installed by the Windows 98 Setup program. To enable your ThinkPad's internal modem, you will need to install the Modem software once Windows 98 is installed on your ThinkPad.
To download the latest version of the Modem software from IBM's Web site, click here - this will require five diskettes. To install the software on your system, please follow the instructions below:
1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert ThinkPad Modem for Windows 95 diskette 1 into the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start=>Run.
4. Type A:\SETUP in the 'Open' field and click on [OK]. This will execute the Modem Setup program.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen to Restart the machine.
6. When the machine restarts the 'Add New Hardware Wizard' dialog box appears. Re-insert the diskette. Click on [Next] for the next three windows that appear on the screen.
7. Click [Next] again and setup begins. Follow the instructions on the screen to swap between the 5 diskettes.
8. Click on [Finish] once its done copying the files. Modem features are now installed.
9. Remove the diskette when prompted.
2.2 Installing ThinkPad Video Features for Windows 98 - applies to all 600/770x models (1 min)
Windows 98 only installs the standard VGA video driver. It is necessary to update this driver .

To install the driver please follow the instructions listed below:
1. Start Windows 98.
2. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel.
3. Double-click on the Display icon. This will bring up the Display Properties window.
4. Click on the 'Settings' tab, then click on the [Advanced...] button.
5. Next, click on the 'Adapter' tab, then on the [Change...] button.
6. Insert the Video Features Diskette for Windows 95 in to the diskette drive. (model dependent).
7. Click on [Next] for the next 3 windows that appear on the screen.
8. Click on [Next] again to start copying the files.
9. Click on [Finish]. Remove the diskette then click on [Yes] to restart your computer.
2.3 Installing ThinkPad Utility for Windows 98 - applies to all 600/770x models (3 mins)
The ThinkPad Utility will allow you to select various features for your ThinkPad under Windows 98. Such features include: power management, Fuel-Guage program, Personalization Editor, Alarm, and others. However, in order for your ThinkPad to fully utilize these features, you will need to install this utility on your computer after installing Windows 98. Three separate diskettes will need to be downloaded off of IBM's Web site.

Please follow the instruction below on how to install the ThinkPad Utility on your system:
1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert the ThinkPad Utility Diskette for Windows 98 into the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start=>Run.
4. Type A:\SETUP in the 'Open' field and click on [OK].
5. Follow the instructions on the screen. Choose the path to copy the files to - we recommend using the default path. Then click on [OK].
6. The default choices are already checked on the "Installation Options" screen. Click on [Install] to start the installation process.
7. Insert the Utility Data Diskette I and Utility Diskette for DOS and Personalization disks into the diskette drive when prompted by the Setup program.
8. When installation has completed, remove the diskette from the diskette drive. Click [OK] to restart your computer.
2.4 Installing MPEG Features for Windows 98 - applies only to 770x MPEG models (3 mins)
The ThinkPad MPEG device driver is not included in Windows 98, and therefore, will not be automatically installed by the Windows 98 Setup program. To allow your system to enable playback of MPEG motion videos, CD-I movies, and video CDs you will need to install the MPEG device driver after installing Windows 98.
To download this device driver from IBM's Web site, click here. To install the MPEG driver, please follow the instructions provided below:
1. Start Windows 98.
2. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel => System => Device Manager.
3. Listed under 'Other Devices' highlight 'PCI Multimedia Device'.
4. Click [Remove] and then click [OK]
5. Shutdown and Restart.
6. During startup the 'Add New Hardware Wizard' dialog box appears. Insert the MPEG Features Diskette III for Windows 95 in the diskette drive.
7. Click [Next] for the next 4 dialog boxes. Click [Finish].
8. If your system has a CD-ROM drive installed, you may need to set the drive letter for the MPEG device that you installed. To do this use the following directions:
Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel => Multimedia
Click on 'Devices' tab and under 'Media Control Devices' click on 'IBM MPEG CD-I / videoCD'
Click [Properties] and click on [Settings]. Enter the correct drive letter for your CD-ROM or click [OK] if its already correct.
9. Remove the diskette and Restart your computer.
2.5 Installing Video Capture Features II for Windows 98 - applies only to 770x MPEG models. (2 mins)
The ThinkPad Video Capture device driver is not included in Windows 98, and therefore, will not be automatically installed by the Windows 98 Setup program. To allow your system to enable the video in/out ports and smooth playback on Video for Windows 98 and compatible software, you will need to install the video capture device driver after installing Windows 98.
To download this device driver from IBM's Web site, click here. To install the driver, please follow the instructions provided below:
1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert the Video Capture III for Windows 95 diskette in the diskette drive.
3. Click on [Start].
4. Click on [Run]
5. Type a:\setup and click on [OK].
6. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the setup.
7. When setup is complete remove the diskette and Restart your computer.
2.6 Installing DVD Video Player for Windows 98 - applies only to 770x models with DVD drive. (3 mins)
The DVD Video Player is not included in Windows 98, and therefore, will not be automatically installed by the Windows 98 Setup program. For systems with DVD support you must install the DVD driver after installing Windows 98.
You will need to use the DVD Video Player and Region code diskettes that came with your DVD player. To install the driver, please follow the instructions provided below:
1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert the DVD Movie for Windows 95 diskette 1 in the diskette drive.
3. Click on [Start].
4. Click on [Run]
5. Type a:\setup and click on [OK].
6. Follow the instructions on the screen to complete the setup.
7. Once the driver is installed insert the DVD Movie Region 1 for Windows 95 diskette in the diskette drive.
8. Click on [Start]
9. Click on [Run..]
10. Type a:\mpginst and click on [OK]. A dialog box will appear stating 'Updating Successful'. Click [OK].
11. Remove the diskette and Restart your computer.
2.7 Installing TrackPoint Driver for Windows 98 - applies to all 600/770x models. (2 mins)
The TrackPoint driver is not included in Windows 98, and therefore, will not be automatically installed by the Windows 98 Setup program. For TrackPoint support you must install the driver after installing Windows 98.

To install the driver, please follow the instructions provided below:
1. Start Windows 98
2. Insert the TrackPoint Driver Diskette for Windows 95/Windows NT in the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel.
4. Double- click on System icon.
5. Click on [Device Manager] Tab.
6. Expand the 'Mouse' option and highlight 'PS/2 Compatible Mouse Port'. Click on [Properties..].
7. Click on [Driver] tab. Click [Update Driver]
8. Click on [Next] for the next 3 dialog boxes that appear on the screen.
9. Click on [Next] again to install the driver. Click on [Finish].
10. Remove the diskette and click [Yes] to Restart your computer.
2.8 Installing the Audio Driver for Windows 98 - applies to all 600/770x models. (3 mins)
Although the Native audio driver functions under 98 it is necessary to follow the procedure below to ensure full functionality. Some of the files that get copied over will be older than the ones currently on your system.

To install the driver, please follow the instructions provided below:
1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert the Audio Features Diskette for Windows 95 into the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start=>Run.
4. Type A:\setup in the 'Open' field and click on [OK].
5. Click on [Uninstall Crystal Drivers] button of the 'Crystal Audio Setup' window.
6. Click on [Restart] and remove the diskette.
7. The 'Add New Hardware Wizard' dialog appears. Insert Audio Features Diskette for Windows 95
8. Click on [Next] for the next 4 dialog boxes.
9. Click on [Finish] . Remove the diskette and Restart your computer.
2.9 Installing the IBM UltraBay Utility Driver for Windows 98 - applies to 770x models. (2 mins)
To enable Hot Swap functionality on the ThinkPad 770x models it is necessary to install this device driver.

To install the driver, please follow the instructions provided below:
1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert the Utility Driver Diskette for Windows 95 in the diskette drive.
3. Go to Start, Settings and Control Panel.
4. Double- click on Add New Hardware.
5. Click [Next], [Next].
6. Select 'No, the device isn't in the list.' Click [Next].
7. Select 'No, I want to select hardware from a list'
8. Click [Next] and highlight 'Other Devices'. Click [Next]
9. Click [Have Disk]. Click [OK].
10. Click [Next] and click [Finish].
11. Remove the diskette and click [Yes] to restart your computer.
2.10 Installing the registry fix for docking station usage - applies to all 600/770x models (2 mins)
Regardless of whether or not you plan to dock your ThinkPad to any of the IBM SelectaDock docking stations, you should apply this registry patch so that Windows 98 can properly configure all of the devices on and off the system unit. This registry fix can be located on the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette.

To install the supplemental file, please follow the instructions provided below:
1. Boot the system.
2. Insert the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette disk into the diskette drive.
3. Click on "Start" then "Run...". This will open the "Run" window.
4. Type A:\PIXX4\APM2APM\APM2APM.reg and click the OK button.
The following window is displayed:
"Registry Editor" Are you sure you want to add the information A:\PIXX4\apm2apm\apm2apm.reg to the registry ?
5. Select "Yes"
Successful window message is displayed.
6. Select "OK"
7. Restart you computer.
2.11 Registry fix to enable the system to enter Standby (suspend), while using a PCMCIA modem card - applies to all 600/770x models (2 mins)
To allow your system to enter Standby while using a PCMCIA modem card and/or while docked, you will need to apply a registry fix. Failing to apply this fix under Windows 98 will prevent your ThinkPad from entering Standby when the PCMCIA modem is in use. This registry fix can be located on the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette.

To apply this patch, please follow the instructions listed below:
1. Insert the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette into diskette drive.
2. Open Start menu -> Run...
3. Click on Start --> Run... This will open the "Run" window.
4. Type A:\DOCKSUSP\DOCKSUSP.reg and click OK button.
The following window is displayed:
"Registry Editor" Are you sure you want to add the information A:\DOCKSUSP\DOCKSUSP.reg to the registry ?
5. Select "Yes"
Successful window message is displayed.
6. Select "OK"
7. Reboot the system.
2.12 Installing the PC Card Feature Diskette for SelectaDock I/II- applies to all 600/770x models. (2 mins)
Windows 98 does not support PC Card slot in SelectaDock I/II. This driver enables the use of the PC Card slot under Windows 98.

To install this driver please follow the instructions provided below:
1. Start Windows 98
2. Insert the PC Card Feature Diskette for SelectaDock I/II in the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel
4. Double-Click on 'Add New Hardware' and Click [Next] for the next 2 windows.
5. Select 'No' and click [Next] since this driver should be manually installed.
6. Select 'System Devices' and click 'Next'
7. Click [Have Disk]
8. Select or type 'A:\' and hit enter.
9. Click [Next] to install the driver. Click on [Finish].
Remove the diskette and click [Yes] to restart your computer.
