**** IMPORTANT NOTICE ****
This document pertains only to ThinkPad's as a standalone system. This means before upgrading your ThinkPad to Windows 98, all attachable devices must be removed. This includes all PCMCIA cards (LAN, Modem, ATA, etc. docking stations, port replicators, and PC Card Enablers. If any of these devices are attached to your ThinkPad during the upgrade installation, Windows 98 may not run as explained in this document.
Upgrading to Windows 98
This document contains information to assist you in upgrading from Microsoft(1) Windows(1) 95 to Windows(1) 98 operating system on IBM(2) ThinkPad 600, 770, 770E/ED systems. Note than when 770x is used in the guide it is referring to all 770 models ie 770/770E/770ED. Please make sure Windows 95 is functioning correctly on your system before upgrading to Windows 98. If you are not sure of the functionality, IBM recommends that you save your data to other devices and use the recovery CD to restore your system to Windows 95 prior to starting the Upgrade procedure.

Step 1 Before Installing Windows 98
1.1 Backing up your software and data
In most cases your data will be kept and if you select the option to keep Windows 95 as a backup you have no need to create an additional backup of the Operating System. However, for safety IBM recommends that you backup all important data files to diskette before Upgrading to Windows 98.
1.2 How to get updated software from IBM
Before installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad, you will need to obtain updated software from IBM. Here's a list of the software you'll need to obtain for your system before installing Windows 98: Here's a list of the software you'll need to obtain for your system before installing Windows 98:

1.3 Updating your ThinkPad System BIOS (2 mins)
Before installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad, you are strongly recommended to get the latest ThinkPad System Program Service Diskette and to update your system BIOS. Otherwise, Windows 98 may not run as explained in this document.
1.3.2 Creating the diskette
1. Download the file to a temporary directory on your hard drive.
2. Insert a blank formatted diskette into the diskette drive.
3. Run the file by double clicking on it from Windows Explorer.
4. Follow the instructions on the screen and it will expand the image onto your diskette drive.
After creating the System Program Service Diskette follow the instructions below:
Note: You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update the system program. Also, if your computer is attached to a port replicator, docking station, or PC Card Enabler, turn off your computer and detach it before proceeding.
1. Print or display on another computer the instructions that accompany the System Program Service Diskette.
2. Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
3. Insert the System Program Service Diskette into the diskette drive and turn on the computer.
4. Select "Read this first..." from the menu and carefully read the information that appears.
5. Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
6. Select "Update system program" and follow the instruction on the screen.
Warning: Do not turn off or suspend your computer until the update has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND YOUR COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.
After the BIOS update has completed, perform the following steps to make the changes effective:
7. Remove the System Program Service Diskette from the diskette drive and press 'Enter' to restart your computer.
8. Press and hold the "F1" key until the Easy-Setup menu appears.
9. If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
10. Select "Config", then press "Initialize".
11. Select "OK" to initialize the system.
12. Click on "Exit".
13. Select "Restart" and click on "OK" to restart your computer.
Windows 98 Upgrade Information
Note: You need to update the flash BIOS prior to upgrading to Windows 98 on your ThinkPad. In case you have already installed Windows 98 and update the flash BIOS later, you may need to run "Add Hardware Wizard" of Windows 98 once again. If some problem still persists, it is recommended to uninstall Windows 98 after the flash BIOS update and upgrade to Windows 98 again.
1.4 ACPI BIOS
The Thinkpad 770E/ED and the Thinkpad 600 models both support ACPI. Information on installing your system with ACPI support will be coming soon!!
Step 2 Removing Preinstalled Software
2.1 SystemSoft CardWorks applies to all 600/770x models 2 mins
This application should be uninstalled before upgrading to Windows 98 or it will cause problems. The functionality supplied with CardWorks is now built into the Operating System.
Please follow the steps below to uninstall the application:
1. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel => Add/Remove Programs
2. Highlight SystemSoft CardWorks.
3. Click on Add/Remove button.
4. Click on Yes to completely remove the application.
5. Click on Yes to restart the computer.
Although SystemSoft CardWorks should be uninstalled before upgrading you may also uninstall it after the upgrade by following the instructions below:
1. Click Start => Programs => MSDOS Prompt
2. At the prompt type copy c:\windows\inf\pcmcia.inf c:\windows\temp. Hit Enter
3. Click Start => Settings => Control Panel. Double click on Add/ Remove Programs
4. Select SystemSoft CardWorks and click Add/Remove button. Follow the instructions on screen to restart your computer.
5. Click Start => Programs => MSDOS Prompt
6. At the prompt type copy c:\windows\temp\pcmcia.inf c:\windows\inf. Hit Enter.
7. Type y and hit Enter to overwrite the file.
8. Click Start => Settings => Control Panel and double click on System icon. Click on Device Manager tab.
9. Locate the PCMCIA socket and click '+' mark to expand it.
10. Select each Texas Instruments PCI 1250 CardBus Controller listed under 'PCMCIA socket' and click on Remove.
11. Shutdown and restart your computer.
12. The 'Add New Hardware Wizard' will appear and will detect the PCMCIA controller. Follow the defaults by clicking Next for each dialog box that appears.
13. When the dialog appears with the Finish button click Finish.
14. Click Yes to restart your computer.
15. If the 'Add New Hardware Wizard' appears again follow the instructions as per steps 12, 13 and 14.
16. System Soft CardWorks is now uninstalled.
2.2 TranXit - applies to 770 only (1 min)
The application TranXit will no longer function properly under Windows 98 and it's recommended that the application be uninstalled from your computer before or after upgrading to Window 98.
Note: If you wish to continue using this software package, you need to upgrade to the full retail version of Intellisync for Windows 95/98. You can purchase the full version from Puma Technology's Web Site at http://www.pumatech.com.
1. Click: Start => Programs => TranXit => TranXit UnInstall.
2. When the dialog box titled "UnInstall" appears -- click on Proceed to remove all TranXit settings in the system.ini file.
3. A "?" dialog pops-up, click Yes to restart computer and save all work.
2.3 IR Support for Microsoft Windows 95 V2.0 - applies to all 600/770x models (1 min)
If the Infrared support under Windows 95 is not uninstalled before upgrading, it may cause resource and device conflicts under Windows 98. Failing to remove this application before upgrading, may render your IR device inoperable for some applications, once you have upgraded your ThinkPad to Windows 98. Therefore, if this application is installed on your ThinkPad under Windows 95, you should uninstall the IR support for Microsoft Windows 95, version 2.0, before upgrading your computer to Windows 98.
To uninstall this application from your ThinkPad under Windows 95, please follow the instructions listed below:
1. Start Windows 95/98.
2. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel.
3. Double-Click on the Add/Remove Programs applet.
4. If "Infrared support for Windows 95 Version 2.0" is one of the applications listed in the 'Add/Remove Programs' dialog box, highlight "Infrared support for Windows 95 Version 2.0", and click on the Add/Remove... button.
5. Next, click on Yes to restart your computer and for the new settings to take effect.
If you have already upgraded your computer to Windows 98, and want to uninstall "Infrared support for Windows 95 Version 2.0" application, please follow the instructions listed above, then to re-enable your system's IR device and ports, please follow the instructions provided below:
Reconfiguring Infrared communication device:
1. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel.
2. Click on the Add New Hardware icon.
3. Follow the instructions the Hardware Wizard presents to you. Click on Next for the next 2 windows that appear on the screen. Windows will start to search for new hardware.
4. Select the "No, the device isn't in the list" option and click on Next.
5. Select "No, I want to select the hardware from a list" and click on Next again.
6. Highlight Infrared devices and click on Next for the next two windows that appear.
7. Select "Use default ports (recommended)" and click Next - The default COM and LPT port settings provide application support for your system's Infrared device.
8. Click on Finish, and when the Hardware Wizard window closes, restart your computer. The next time you reboot your system, the IR device will be configured and function properly under Windows 98.
Updating the drivers for the Infrared serial COM and printing LPT ports:
1. Start Windows 98.
2. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel.
3. Double-Click on the System icon, then click on the Device Manager tab.
4. If the Ports (COM & LPT) entry isn't expanded, Double-Click on it. Next, Double-Click on Virtual Infrared COM port. This will open up a Properties window for the Infrared serial (COM) port.
5. Click on the Driver tab, then click on the Update Driver... button.
6. Click Next for the next 3 windows that appear on the screen - the Infrared Serial COM port driver will be updated.
7. Click Next, then Finish to update the driver. Finally, close the device's property window.
8. Repeat steps 4 through 7 to update the driver for the 'Infrared Printing (LPT) port'. However, in step 4, Double-Click the 'Virtual Infrared LPT port' entry instead. This time, the driver for the Infrared Printing [LPT] port in step 6 will be updated.
9. Close the System Properties window.
10. Restart your computer.
Step 3 Upgrading to Windows 98
When upgrading to Windows 98, it is recommended that you review the information provided in the Windows 98 upgrade / installation guide. When you do an upgrade installation over Windows 95, the Windows 98 Setup routine will assume your existing configuration is correct and will leave your system settings as they are. To upgrade from Windows 95, please follow the instructions below:
Note: Before installing Windows 98 on your ThinkPad, you are strongly recommended to get the latest System Program Service Diskette and update your system BIOS. Also, it's recommended that you obtain from IBM all updated software that you will need to install after installing Windows 98. Lastly, IBM recommends that you use a diskette backup program on your system to create recovery diskettes of the preinstalled operating system's device drivers, and applications if you do not have a Recovery CD or Back-up CD with CD-ROM drive on your system.
1. Start Windows 95.
2. Insert the Windows 98 CD into the CD-ROM drive.
3. Close any other Windows programs you might have open.
4. Immediately after inserting the installation CD, a window titled Windows 98 CD-ROM will appear on your screen. To upgrade your computer to Windows 98 now, click on Yes.
If the Windows 98 CD-ROM window does not appear on your screen please perform the following steps:
a. Click: Start=>Run.
b. Type D:\Win98\SETUP in the 'Open' field, where the letter (D:) is the drive designation for your computer's CD-ROM. Then, click OK.
5. When the upgrade installation to Windows 98 starts, please follow any prompts that are presented on your screen until the installation has completed. If you encounter problems setting up Windows 98, refer to the setup.txt file that comes with the installation cd.
6. When the upgrade process is completed, your computer will be ready to run Windows 98.
Note: During the initial stages of the Windows 98 Setup process, a window panel titled Save System Files will appear on the screen. When this window appears, you will be asked if you want to save your existing MS-DOS and Windows system files. As a precaution, Microsoft has included this option to allow you to uninstall Windows 98 if necessary and resort back to Windows 95. Choosing this option requires you to have up to 50 MB of free disk space.
Note: If you are using the OS/2 Boot Manager to upgrade your computer to Windows 98, you may experience an exception error when setting up the process. If this occurs, power-off and restart your computer. After restarting, the setup routine will proceed with the installation of Windows 98.
3.1 Installing the ThinkPad Utility for Windows 98 - applies to all 600/770x models (3 mins)
The latest version of the ThinkPad Utility will continue to provide the same functionality, plus some enhanced features, under Windows 98 as it did under Windows 95. This still includes the ThinkPad Configuration, Fuel Gauge Program, and Personalization Editor. However, in order for your ThinkPad to fully utilize all of the features under Windows 98, you must install the latest version of this program on your ThinkPad after upgrading to Windows 98.
Please follow the instruction below on how to install the ThinkPad Utility on your system:
1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert the ThinkPad Utility Diskette for Windows 95 into the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start=> Run.
4. Type A:\SETUP in the 'Open' field and click on OK.
5. Follow the instructions on the screen. You'll want to copy the new files into the same directory where the older version exists, (default C:\ThinkPad). Then click on OK.
6. Insert the Utility Data Diskette I and the Utility Diskette for DOS and Personalization into the diskette drive when prompted by the Setup program.
7. When installation has completed, remove any diskette from the diskette drive, and restart your computer.
3.2 Installing the updated Modem version for Windows 98 - applies to 600/770x models with ThinkPad Modem (8 mins)
If your system has Thinkpad Modem support it is recommended that you upgrade the Modem software to the latest version after upgrading to Windows 98. However, before upgrading your Modem software, you must first download the updated Modem Features Diskettes for Windows 95/98 from IBM's Web site.
To install the updated Modem software on your system, please follow these steps:
1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert Thinkpad Modem for Windows 95/98 diskette 1 into the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start=> Run.
4. Type A:\SETUP in the 'Open' field and click OK.
5. Dialog box appears stating 'You are about to remove our software!! Do you really want to do this?'. Click Yes for next 2 dialog boxes. Then click OK.
6. Now a dialog box appears stating 'our software is removed from your system'. Click OK for the next 2 dialog boxes. Remove the diskette when prompted.
7. Dialog box appears asking 'Do you wish to continue your software upgrade now?'. Click Yes.
8. Click OK to Shutdown and Restart.
9. When the system restarts the 'Add New Hardware Wizard' appears. Insert Thinkpad Modem for Windows 95/98 diskette 1 now.
10. Click Next for the next 5 dialog boxes and the files will begin copying.
11. Follow the instructions on the screen to swap between the 5 diskettes.
12. Click on Finish once its done copying the files.
13. Remove the diskette when prompted.
3.3 Installing the Updated TrackPoint Driver for Windows 95 - applies to all 600/770x models (2 mins)
IBM recommends that you update the TrackPoint driver after installing Windows 98.
To install the driver, please follow the instructions provided below:
1. Start Windows 98
2. Insert the TrackPoint Driver diskette for Windows 95/Windows NT in the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel.
4. Double- click on System icon.
5. Click on Device Manager Tab.
6. Expand the 'Mouse' option and highlight PS/2 TrackPoint.
7. Click on Properties... Click on Driver tab. Click Update Driver
8. Click on Next for the next 5 dialog boxes then click Finish
9. Remove the diskette and click Yes to restart the computer.
3.4 Installing the Updated Utility Driver Diskette for Windows 95/98 - applies to 770 model only (2 mins)
If the Windows 95 UltraBay device driver is installed on your system under Windows 95, this driver will automatically migrate to the Windows 98 environment. However, continued use on this driver under Windows 98 will prevent your ThinkPad from entering suspend mode. Therefore, it is recommended that your replaced the UltraBay driver with an updated version provided by IBM.
To install the driver, please follow the instructions provided below:
1. Start Windows 98
2. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel.
3. Double- click on System icon.
4. Click on Device Manager Tab.
5. Expand the 'IBM Thinkpad UltraBay' option and highlight ThinkPad UltraBay Hot Swap driver.
6. Click on Properties.. and check 'disable in hardware profile' . Click OK
7. Restart the operating system.
8. Again, go to Device Manager and highlight 'UltraBay Hot Swap driver'. Click on Remove.
9. Restart the operating system.
10. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel => Add New Hardware.
11. Click Next for the next 2 dialog boxes.
12. Select No, the device isn't in the list and click Next.
13. Select No, I want to select the hardware from a list and click Next.
14. Highlight Other Device in the device selection menu and insert the Utility Driver diskette for Windows 95 in the diskette drive and click Next.
15. Click Have disk.. and click OK. Highlight Thinkpad Ultra Bay Hot Swap driver.
16. Click Next, then Finish. You may see the following warning dialog- 'A file being copied over is older than the file currently on your computer. It is recommended that you keep your existing file. Do you want to keep this file?'. If you see this warning Click No and continue the installation. If you don't see this warning proceed to step 17 below.
17. Remove the diskette and click Yes to restart your computer.
3.5 Installing the Thinkpad Video Features Diskette - applies to all 600/770x models (1 min)
Although the Windows 98 native video display driver is functional under Windows 98 it is necessary to update this driver to get full functionality.
To install the driver please follow the instructions provided below:
Thinkpad 770 Video Features DisketteIV) for Windows 95
1. Start Windows 98.
2. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel.
3. Double-Click on the Display icon. This will bring up the Display Properties window.
4. Click on the Settings tab, then click on the Advanced... button.
5. Next, click on the Adapter tab, then on the Change... button.
6. Insert the Video Features Diskette IV for Windows 95/98 in to the diskette drive.
7. Click on Next for the next 3 dialog boxes.
8. Click on Next again to start copying the files.
9. 'Insert Disk' dialog appears. Click OK.
10. While copying the files you will see a dialog saying 'The file 'chipmap7.cfg' on the Video Features Diskette for Windows 95 cannot be found.'. In the 'copy files from' drop down list box select A:\ from the list and click OK
11. Click on Finish. Remove the diskette and then click on Yes to restart your computer.
Thinkpad 600 Video Features Diskette (NM2160) for Windows 95
To install the driver please follow the instructions provided below:
1. Start Windows 98.
2. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel.
3. Double-Click on the Display icon. This will bring up the Display Properties window.
4. Click on the Settings tab, then click on the Advanced... button.
5. Next, click on the Adapter tab, then on the Change... button.
6. Insert the Video Features Diskette (NM2160) for Windows 95 in to the diskette drive.
7. Click on Next for the next 3 windows that appear on the screen.
8. Click on Next again to start copying the files.
9. 'Insert Disk' dialog appears. Click OK.
10. The 'Copying files' dialog will appear stating 'The file 'NeoMagic.dll' on Win 95 NeoMagic Driver Disk cannot be found'. In the 'copy files from' drop down list box select A:\ from the list and click OK.
11. Click on Finish. Remove the diskette and click on Yes to restart your computer.
3.6 Registry fix to enable the system to enter Standby (suspend), while using a PCMCIA modem card - Applies to all 600/770x models (2 mins)
To allow your system to enter Standby while using a PCMCIA modem card and/or while docked, you will need to apply a registry fix. Failing to apply this fix under Windows 98 will prevent your ThinkPad from entering Standby when the PCMCIA modem is in use. This registry fix can be located on the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette.
To apply this patch, please follow the instructions listed below:
1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette disk into the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start => Run.
4. Type A:\docksusp\docksusp.reg in the 'Open' field and click on OK.
5. A window titled Registry Editor will appear on your screen. Click on Yes to add information to the registry.
6. Click on OK to verify that the information has successfully been added to the registry.
7. Remove any disk from the diskette drive and restart your computer.
3.7 Installing the PC Card Feature Diskette for SelectaDock I/II - applies to all 600/770x models (2 mins)
Windows 98 does not support PC Card slot in SelectaDockI/II for the 600/770x ThinkPad models. This driver enables the use of the PC Card slot under Windows 98.
To install this driver please follow the instructions provided below:
1. Start Windows 98
2. Insert the installation diskette in the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start => Settings => Control Panel
4. Double click on Add New Hardware and Click Next for the next 2 dialog boxes.
5. Select No and click Next since this driver should be manually installed.
6. Select No, I want to select the hardware from a list and click Next.
7. Select System Devices and click Next.
8. Insert the PC Card Feature diskette for SelectaDock I/II in the diskette drive.
9. Click Have disk
10. Select or type A:\ and click OK.
11. Click Next and click Finish. While copying files you may see message 'The file TPSSCTRL.vxd on (unknown) cannot be found'. Click OK
12. Remove the diskette and click Yes to restart your computer.
3.8 Installing the Audio Features Diskette for Windows 95 - applies to all 600/770x models (3 mins)
IBM recommends that you update the driver after installing Windows 98.
To install the driver, please follow the instructions provided below:
1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert the Audio Features Diskette for Windows 95 into the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start=> Run
4. Type A:\setup in the 'Open' field and click on OK.
5. Click on Uninstall Crystal Drivers button of the 'Crystal Audio Setup' window.
6. Click Restart and remove the diskette.
7. When 'Add New Hardware Wizard' dialog appears insert the Audio Features Diskette for Windows 95
8. Click on Next for the next 4 dialog boxes.
9. Click on Finish. Remove the diskette and restart your computer.
3.9 Installing the registry fix for docking station usage - applies to all 600/770x models (2 mins)
Regardless of whether or not you plan to dock your ThinkPad to any of the IBM Selectadock docking stations, you should apply this registry patch so that Windows 98 can properly configure all of the devices on and off the system unit. This registry fix can be located on the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette.
To install the supplemental file, please follow the instructions provided below:
Case (1) Users that upgrade to Windows 98 with APM support (applies to all 600/770x models). This is the default case. Unless you typed 'setup /pj' when installing Windows 98 your machine is configured for APM support.
Case 1 Instructions:
1. Start Windows 98.
2. Insert the Windows 98 Supplement File Diskette disk into the diskette drive.
3. Click: Start => Run.
4. Type A:\PIXX4\apm2apm\apm2apm.reg in the 'Open' field and click on OK.
5. A window titled Registry Editor will appear on your screen. Click on Yes to add information to the registry.
6. Click on OK to verify that the information has successfully been added to the registry.
7. Remove any disk from the diskette drive and restart your computer.
