Applicable to: World-Wide

This document contains information to assist you with the installation of Windows 95 on the IBM ThinkPad 770. These instructions assume you are working with a blank formatted hard drive with the CD-ROM installed in the computer and the floppy drive attached externally.

Installing Windows 95
Installing Software for Windows 95
This section describes the installation procedures for Windows 95 and its device drivers for your ThinkPad computer.

Your Version of Windows 95

The version of Windows 95 you buy in shops is different from that preloaded on your computer. The version preloaded on your computer is called "Windows 95 OSR2." You cannot buy this version in shops, but it is in the recovery CD-ROM that came in your package.
You can check which version of Windows 95 you are using by double-clicking on My Computer, Control Panel, and then System.

The following window appears:

Overall Procedure:
1. Have the Windows 95 installation package in hand.
2. Back up your software and personal data files on the hard disk.
3. Create the device drivers to operate the ThinkPad computer's various features using the Diskette Factory program preloaded on the hard disk. You need to create at least the following device driver diskettes:

*NOTE: For OSR0 and OSR1, you will also need the following program from Microsoft:
REMIDEUP.EXE (hyperlink to http://support.microsoft.com/download/support/mslfiles/REMIDEUP.EXE)
Alternately available on IBM's FTP Server: ftp://ftp.infania.net/pccbbs/mobiles/remideup.exe

Installing Microsoft Windows 95
For Windows 95 OSR0 and OSR1
1. Make sure there is enough space in the hard disk to store the cabinet files and the installation programs (the required space may vary depending on the language of Windows 95)
2. Make a temporary directory, for example, at a DOS prompt enter the following: MD C:\WIN95
3. Copy all the cabinet (.CAB) files and the installation programs from the \WIN95 directory of the Windows 95 CD-ROM to this directory For example, enter at the DOS prompt:
COPY src_cd:\WIN95\*.* tgt_drv:\tgt_dir
Where src_cd is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive (D, E...), tgt_drv is the driver letter, and tgt_dir is the temporary directory that you made in step 2.
4. Insert the Windows 95 Supplementary Diskette into the diskette drive and copy the updated files from the Windows 95 supplementary diskette to the temporary directory. For example, enter at the DOS prompt:
COPY a:\OSR0INF\*.* tgt_drv:\tgt_dir
Where tgt_drv is the drive letter, and tgt_dir is the temporary directory that you made in step 2.
5. Install the operating system by entering SETUP.EXE at the temporary directory prompt.
6. Refer to the Windows 95 documentation and the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation.
7. If required, install OSR1 version available from the Microsoft Internet home page.
8. After booting Windows 95 up, run REMIDEUP.EXE.
9. If required, remove all the files in the temporary directory and the directory itself after you complete the installation, to free the space on the hard disk.
10. If you want to continue to install all device drivers, go on to "Installing the ThinkPad Display Driver for Windows 95".

For Windows 95 OSR2 and OSR2.1
The Windows 95 OEM Service Release 2 (OSR2) and 2.1 (OSR2.1) are available only as preloaded versions unless you have some special license agreement with Microsoft. If you do not have a CD-ROM of OSR2 or OSR2.1, you should reinstall them by restoring the original preloaded image from the Recovery CD. Refer to ThinkPad 770 documentation for more detail about Recovery CD.

If you have a CD-ROM of OSR2 and OSR2.1, do the following:
1. Make sure there is enough space in the hard disk to store the cabinet files and the installation programs (the required space may vary depending on the language of Windows 95)
2. Make a temporary directory. For example, enter at the DOS prompt: MD C:\WIN95
3. Copy all the cabinet (.CAB) files and the installation programs from the \WIN95 directory of the Windows 95 CD-ROM to this directory For example, enter at the DOS prompt: COPY src_cd:\WIN95\*.* tgt_drv:\tgt_dir Where src_cd is the drive letter of the CD-ROM drive (D, E...), tgt_drv is the driver letter, and tgt_dir is the temporary directory that you made in step 2.
4. Insert the Windows 95 supplementary diskette into the diskette drive and copy the updated files from the Windows 95 supplementary diskette to the temporary directory. For example, enter at the DOS prompt:
COPY a:\OSR2INF\*.* tgt_drv:\tgt_dir COPY a:\CARDBUS\*.* tgt_drv:\tgt_dir
Where tgt_drv is the drive letter, and tgt_dir is the temporary directory that you made in step 2.
5. Install the operating system by entering SETUP.EXE at the temporary directory prompt.
6. Refer to the Windows 95 documentation and the instructions that appear on the screen to complete the installation.
7. Insert the Windows 95 supplementary diskette into the diskette drive
8. Change the drive letter at the DOS prompt to A: and run \QFE444\PCCARDUP.EXE
9. Reboot the system.
10. To update the Unimodem drivers to support the Intel Video Phone application:
a) Insert the Windows 95 supplementary diskette into the diskette drive.
b) From the DOS prompt, go to C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM (or the SYSTEM subdirectory where Windows 95 is installed)
c) Rename the UNIMODEM.VXD and UNIMDM.TSP files by entering:
REN UNIMODEM.VXD UNIMODEM.BAK
REN UNIMDM.TSP UNIMDM.BAK
d) Copy new files by entering COPY a:\UNIMODEM\*.*
11. If you are installing OSR 2.1, refer to the documentation shipped with this version.
